Another month and time for another team dinner in Amsterdam and the chosen restaurant was Simpel, a small place in the south of the city not far from the Rijksmuseum on a street called Ferdinand Bolstraat. We had a table booked for 7.30 pm and were only a few minutes late but three people short of the booking for eight people. Luckily the owner/manager didn’t seem too upset that we were light on people and simply cleared away the extra cutlery and glasses.I had a strong sense of déjà vu because the restaurant layout was like so many we’ve been to in the last few years. It had a small frontage onto the street, high ceilings and a long narrow dining area. Stylistically it was a bit ‘re...Read More

Attraction | "A Secular Cathedral of Great Grandeur"

Antwerpen Centraal – a.k.a. Antwerp Central station – is one of my favourite buildings in Antwerp and a place I always enjoy visiting, even though it’s for the purposes of catching trains or arriving on them. I don’t feel anything like this level of enthusiasm for most British railway stations with the possible exception of Kings Cross St Pancras, but Antwerp is really rather special. Thanks to my occasional use of the high-speed Thalys between Amsterdam and Antwerp, I get to visit the station several times every year and it never fails to make me smile. There was a time when railway stations were the secular cathedrals of our world, the giant constructions that stood as testimony to our fa...Read More

If you go looking online for information about Keurkaas Dickers, don’t be surprised if you cannot find it listed anywhere as a restaurant. The colleague who took me to this place had only recently discovered it and seemed rather pleased to be sharing her secret venue with me. We have only recently started working together because I’m covering the role of her boss who has been sick for several months and so this was a first ‘getting to know you’ lunch for the two of us.From the street there’s little to suggest that you’re about to enter a restaurant, especially since your first reaction is likely to be one of wrinkling up your nose in mild disgust because Keurkaas Dickers is first an...Read More

Restaurant | "A bit haphazard but with good food"

I recently stayed at the Ramada Plaza in Antwerp with some colleagues and since we’d been fortunate enough to all arrive early evening, we decided to go out for dinner and one colleague who knows the area particularly well recommended we go to Brusketta. The restaurant is about a five minute walk to the restaurant through an area of beautiful old buildings and small businesses and is located on the corner of a street with a terrace outside for those brave enough to risk the weather. We felt it was a bit too cold for that so we went inside to ask for a table. When I saw how small the dining area was I did wonder if we'd be turned away or sent outside as there was space inside for no more than 30 covers...Read More

Restaurant | "Flexing my mussels"

On a recent visit to Antwerp I had the opportunity to go for dinner with my lovely colleague Rosy who works at the office there. She asked if I had anything in particular in mind, and I said I’d love to eat mussels. She then booked a table at her very favourite restaurant in the city – a place called Mampoko. Even on a Wednesday evening in the middle of the school holidays, it’s still a good idea to book a table at any restaurant in the city. Antwerp appears to be totally recession proof and any decent restaurant will always be busy. The night before going to Mampoko I had eaten in another Antwerp restaurant called Brusketta which was physically quite similar to Mampoko. Both restaura...Read More
