As you travel across Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it is impossible to not traverse through at least a portion of the Hiawatha National Forest. Spanning north at Lake Superior to south at Lake Michigan, this national forest is actually two separate tracts of land. Referred to easily enough as the east and the west units, both areas offer visitors much to explore and experience.Of course, they had me at "home to six lighthouses" since that was as much a part of my decision on making this trip to the U P as it was to just "get away" for a few days. So let's start there. From the USDA website: "Six historic lighthouses stand on Hiawatha’s Great Lakes shorelines, five of which ar...Read More

Stretching more than 40 miles across the northern coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (more commonly referred to as "The U P"), Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most popular destinations on the U P. The sights to see are varied in this jewel of the US National Park Service; frankly too many for just a day or two visit. I would attempt to do as much as I could with the limited time I had.The park begins at Munising to the west and ends to the east at Grand Marais, following the Lake Superior shoreline. It is mostly accessible by a decent paved road, although some areas do require off-roading, hiking or a boat. For me, I had to keep it simple making most of my journey by c...Read More

As I was working my way back west and south, I came across the entrance to the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Having read and heard a bit about it, I thought I would stop in to check it out. Their visitor center with nice flushing toilets was a special bonus!Inside the visitor center were a couple of rangers, available to answer questions or direct guests to various viewing areas. One couple had stopped in to find out about backpacking trails before heading into the marshy wetlands. In the visitor center they also had several exhibits, including pelts from a variety of mammals that could be seen in the park. The Seney National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 to addr...Read More

While admittedly I didn't get to experience everything that Michigan's Upper Peninsula (aka "the U P") has to offer, I did get to sample quite a bit. In one case, a bit more than I bargained for!On my second day, I wanted to make my way from Grand Marais to the Crisp Point Lighthouse. The photos I've seen of it are beautiful, as it sits right on a sandy beach overlooking Lake Superior. I had Mapquested that part of my trip before leaving home, so I knew it would be a bit of a long slog . . . around 50 miles and two hours. What I didn't count on, was that my Garmin would have me taking an even more direct route on what I later learned were mostly off road vehicle trails, not intended fo...Read More

One of the top attractions on Michigan's Upper Peninsula (aka "the U P") is Oswald's Bear Ranch. Owned by Dean & Jewel Oswald, the bear ranch located in Newberry, is reported to be the only exclusive bear ranch in the United States. Rescuing and raising bears since 1984, the Oswalds started welcoming visitors to view black bears up close and personally in a protective environment in 1997.They have four large enclosures that feature the habitat familiar to black bears. They have the males and females segregated in separate areas, with the yearlings and first year cubs kept in their own enclosures. During my time at Oswald's Ranch, I tried to spend time observing bears in each of the...Read More
