The Half Moon Bay National Park consists of a beautiful beach area and a rocky cliff section which is constantly beaten by waves, resulting in spectacular ocean sprays. This cliff area can be visited by means of a quick hike along the shoreline over several boulders. After enjoying the beach for a few hours, I decided to undertake the short journey to the 'water works' at the edge of Half Moon Bay. The climb begins at the end of the left side of the beach. It starts off with an easy walk on the smooth sandy shoreline before leading through shallow waters. Soon enough, I arrived at the base of the cliff where I had to carefully make my way across many boulders. Beach shoes ar...Read More

Attraction | "Snorkel or surf at the same beach!"

Quote:
The Half Moon Bay National Park is located on the far Eastern side of Antigua, beyond the rural village of Freetown. The bay received its name due to the crescent shape formed by its deep indentation in the coastline. This is probably the furthest beach to visit from the city, being a little more than a half an hour drive from St. Johns. The drive to the bay is particularly scenic, offering glimpses into the countryside and farming communities of Antigua. The road is in great condition due to the fact that the Eastern side of the island doesn't get as much precipitation and traffic is exceedingly light. On the way to Half Moon Bay, I passed countless small-scale farms, paddock...Read More

Attraction | "Willoughby Bay Lookout & Beach"

Quote:
Willoughby Bay is a deep indentation in the Antiguan coastline, found about two miles from Shirley Heights. While on a cycle tour, Willoughby Bay was my first destination and for a very good reason. The general area is basically uninhabited, and the traffic flow is extremely limited. This was ideal for safer cycling and quiet surroundings.Due to being on the Atlantic side of the island, Willoughby Bay was never turned into a harbour, as it lacks the required sheltered environment. The winds on this side of the island are rougher and they whip across the sea forming large waves to crash against the cliffside. Atop a small hill, there's a wooden open shed which serves as the Will...Read More

Attraction | "Hiking to Fort Barrington"

Fort Barrington Photo, St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda
Quote:
Fort Barrington is an abandoned colonial fort which once protected the island of Antigua from foreign troops in the 18th century. Situated atop a hill which locals refer to as Goat Hill, Fort Barrington is actually the only fort within the country which actually served its purpose in a battle against invaders. The location of the fortress is such that it would be impossible for uninvited battle ships to sneak into the St. John's Harbour without being detected. Goat Hill provides a brilliant vantage point, and being on a small peninsular ensures that most of the views are over water. In addition to it's militant purpose, Fort Barrington also served as a Watch House, with the duty to alert ot...Read More

Attraction | "Galleon Beach and Surrounding Views"

Through the dust speckled screen of my windshield, the water glittered a bright metallic blue from the glaring midday sun. This amazing stretch of water which I gazed upon belonged to none other than Galleon Beach, and I couldn't wait to dive in. In order to get to Galleon Beach, I had to drive up the hill which leads to Shirley's Heights in English Harbour. Not too far up the slope, there's a junction with a sign which points visitors in the direction of the beach. The road leading downhill is narrow with many blind corners, so I had to keep a sharp eye on my speedometer. A craggy cliff face framed the road on one side, and a ravine on the other side had me hugging the rocky edge. I had t...Read More
