According to Mapquest, it is 193 miles and should take right about three and a half hours to make the drive from our house to Peninsula State Park, where I would be camping for the duration of my visit to Door County. Because I wanted to also stop along the coastal areas from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay, I opted to hop off I43 and make my way over to Hwy 42 for my journey. The trip was only slightly longer (230 miles) but took a whopping four hours more because of all of the stops I did make along the way.My primary interest in taking this route was to view and photograph the lighthouses along the way. While the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse was the first planned stop, I couldn't help b...Read More

OK so sometimes travel and sightseeing just falls into the category of kismet! During my time in Fish Creek I had the opportunity to strike up conversations with many people, especially when they learned that I was traveling largely to add to my "Wisconsin Series" of travel journals and stories. One lady was asking me about my other entries in the series, seeking ideas of other unique Wisconsin communities to visit during their RV trip through the Midwest. When I mentioned my interest and some of my writings on the Amish, she asked if I was aware of the weekend's Amish Quilt & Craft Show. While admittedly, I did read about it somewhere during my initial research for this trip, I had ...Read More

Door County's Barn Quilt Trail

As with other communities throughout Wisconsin, Door County has embarked upon a barn quilt effort of their own. Organized by the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay Extension Office in partnership with 4H, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and other community groups, it appears their efforts have been very successful in just three short years.According to their website (http://www.barnquiltsofdoorcounty.com/?format=html&page=1) there are more than 30 of the colorful squares gracing a variety of rural buildings around the county. The program as developed by the UW Extension Service is largely intended to encourage tourism around the state, creating awareness for our farming heritage. D...Read More

Door County Trolley offers a number of tours that are informative and entertaining. I decided that the evening Ghosts Tour was the one that was most interesting to me. I am so happy that I did choose this as it was a fun evening spent with our ghoulish guide (and driver) Bob and roughly 20 others from around the Midwest. The tour is aboard an enclosed trolley, although the windows can be opened if you wish to have some breeze through the vehicle. On this particular evening, it was a bit on the chilly side, so windows were back up shortly after we left the meeting point at the Orchard Country Winery & Market in Fish Creek.A bit about Bob . . . he is a former teacher who p...Read More

I will try to keep this "fishing story" factual, because as we all know, most fishing stories do have an element of fiction to them!Last summer my brother-in-law brought over some smoked salmon he said a friend of his had caught in Lake Michigan. While the fish was delicious, I was surprised to hear such a story so I had to research it for myself as I was only familiar with saltwater based salmon. Since Lake Michigan is nearly a 1,000 miles as the fish swims, from any body of salt water, I didn't understand how salmon would be caught along the Wisconsin coast.I read that Lake Michigan was stocked many years ago with coho (silver) and chinook (king) salmon. The rationale was ...Read More

Not a restaurant or attraction, I wasn't really sure how to provide my review for Hickey Bros. Market, so I opted to write a "story" instead. Before my trip to Door County I had already researched "what if" options if I were to catch a fish during my charter . . . or perhaps more importantly if I didn't catch a fish. Hickey Bros. Market is located right near the Baileys Harbor Yacht Marina where my charter would be going out from and they are the fish processor recommended if you want to have your catch frozen or smoked.I was happy to learn that they not only process fish, but they also serve as a fish retailer for those wishing to purchase freshly caught and prepared fish; inc...Read More

Attraction | "Locally Grown - Everything Cherry"

This is one of many local roadside markets that features Door County cherries. While I did stop at several, I thought this one had the widest variety of products and provided the best "one stop" shopping experience for anyone on a tight schedule. Not only do they have rows and rows of cherry trees, they also have a vineyard producing grapes for their winery.Inside their market guests can sample and shop for a variety of products made with Door County cherries. I was surprised at just how good the "Medium" Cherry Salsa was . . . so I had to buy a jar. I also found Cherry Chutney, which may or may not be as good as what we enjoyed in Ireland last year, but I bought a jar of that too....Read More

Peninsula State Park is nearly 4,000 acres of pristine coastal recreation area that features beaches, wooded hiking and cycling trails, an 18 hole golf course and more than 450 campsites in five campgrounds. I camped there all three of my nights in Door County and was very impressed with just how nice this park was. There are so many activities and features, it is difficult to experience them in in just a few short days. I will highlight those things I did do during my visit. First, about the camping . . . I use our van as my "camping unit" as they refer to it so my experiences will be different from those who haul in trailers, drive RVs or pitch tents . . . all of which are visible thro...Read More

As you might imagine, with just 4 days/3 nights it would be impossible to see, do and experience everything that is offered in any tourist area. For me in Door County, this was especially exaggerated because of the wealth of opportunities on land and in the water! I tried to seek out and personally do a nice sampling of Door County experiences, but there were so many things left for next time. There were also some things that I did get to see (or do) that just do not warrant their own review or story, so I'll include them here too. So hang on . . . here we gooooooooo!Love the water? Well Door County has over 300 miles of shoreline, with many pristine beaches, sand dunes, quaint waterf...Read More
