Quote: One of the primary interests I had for my 4 day/3 night trip to Door County was the rich maritime history. Bordering two of the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan and Lake Superior), Wisconsin has a very rich nautical heritage. This journal will feature some of that history.

The American Folklore Theatre (AFT) stage is nestled among the tall pines of Peninsula State Park, between Fish Creek and Ephraim in Door County, Wisconsin. The outdoor stage provides the perfect setting to enjoy stories of the type that have been passed down from generation to generation, creating the very folklore that brings people back year after year.AFT was created from the vision of a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay professor who in 1970 worked with students and co-wrote an original piece in celebration of the heroes of the Great Lakes Region. Later that year while camping at Peninsula State Park he stumbled upon the park's amphitheater and began dreaming about putting on a show...Read More

The Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) operates three museums in Door County. I was fortunate to be able to visit and tour two of the three. (I will have to make time for the Cana Island Lighthouse & Museum on my next trip to Door County!)The first one I spent time at was in Sturgeon Bay, right on my main route north into the Door County peninsula. It is in a very convenient location, making it an easy stop north or south. Their museum in Gills Rock, however, requires a bit of effort and commitment, given that it is located at the northern most tip of the peninsula. That said, it is very convenient for those who are planning a ferry trip over to Washington Island, as the two ferri...Read More

During my recent trip to Door County, I wanted to seek out opportunities to learn more about Wisconsin's place in America's rich maritime history. The Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) operates three museums in Door County. The first of the two museums that I visited in Door County was the one in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The first thing that struck me was the wonderful new building they have, right on the waterfront. The inside is just as impressive as the exterior with several exhibit areas and a nice gift shop. I started my self-guided tour learning about the history of ship making, dating back to the early Native Americans' techniques used to build their birch bark canoes. This is o...Read More

Back in May I had the opportunity to tour the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse in San Simeon, California. It was a very educational and entertaining morning spent learning about lighthouses; their construction and functionality as well as how they have evolved over the past 150+ years thanks to innovation and technology. During that visit, I became aware of the US Lighthouse Society and their passport program.Designed to encourage public awareness and ultimately the preservation of lighthouses around the United States, the passport program is similar to the program the US National Parks Service implemented back in the 1980's. As an active participant in that program, it was practically an aut...Read More

During my recent vacation in California, I got bit by the lighthouse bug at Piedras Blancas Light Station located in San Simeon. Since I was already planning a trip to Door County without much of a real focus, it was easy to make searching for and photographing lighthouses a priority. Apparently I am not alone in my interest, as the Door County Visitor Bureau publishes a nice little bi-fold color pamphlet entitled "Lighthouse Map of Door County." It was my guide as I planned for my four days of activities and tours. With 11 lighthouses and range lights, Door County provides visitors with ample opportunities to view and in some cases tour these architectural marvels. Some are very access...Read More

A couple of the lighthouses that I wanted to see were only accessible by boat, which meant finding a charter tour that would provide the opportunity to view the remote locations on Plum Island and Pilot Island. Shoreline Charters' "Deaths Door and Islands Lighthouse Cruise" was the perfect choice to get out on the water and see what is out there. The tour was aboard the 33 foot "Shoreline" a boat originally built in Sturgeon Bay, WI for use by the US Navy. She had the capacity for 16 passengers plus the crew of two. Capt. John ably navigated her during our 90 minute cruise, with Judy providing the informational narration during most of the trip. I say "most" because Capt. John also shar...Read More
