Standing on the Middle of the World. It is an idea that is hard to grasp when you look at a globe but the line is not really there of course ad to find it precisely you need a compass but we are not fussy and it is the interest and novelty of standing on this line that made us stop and visit. This huge monument at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is owned by the prefecture of the province of Pichincha, in Ecuador and naturally enough they want to get the most out of the tourists wanting to stand on the line and take photos. In order to do that they have built an entire site around a thirty foot monument, drawn lines to indicate the 'false' Equator and set up stalls and so on. Sadly though, thanks ...Read More

Tricks on the Equator in Ecuador

Story/Tip

The site of the Equator Photo, Ecuador, South America

Balancing an EggI have crossed the Equator a few times and each time there has been some novelty that we have been shown. On our way to the Cloud Forest in Ecuador we stopped at the official Mitad del Mundo or middle of the world site. There is a lot more at this site but it is not actually on the Equator so in order to do the Equator tricks you have to walk some hundred yards away from this site.On our way to Otavalo on our day trip, our guide pulled over at a small village with a few shops at the side of the road and told us this was the Equator line. We hadn't realised we would be crossing it again so this was a nice bonus. Compared to the Mitad del Mundo this was...Read More

I had not been to Ecuador before and so I wanted to see as much as I possibly could in the short time we were there. One thing we did enjoy was our day trip to Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge. Bellavista is in the Tandayapa Valley, and is lower than Quito which seemed strange as we seemed to spend a lot of the time driving upwards along the little track. It is part of what is known as the 'high cloud forest' at 2,200  metres so needless to say it is often in the clouds and they do get a lot of rain.THE LODGE AND ROOMSIt is possible to stay at the lodge or just go up and back from Quito in a day. If you are not short of time I would suggest staying a night as it was a v...Read More

We spent a night here on our way from the Galapagos islands through to Santiago in Chile. Firstly it was a quick and easy ten minute drive drive from the airport and it was very central in Guayaquil. We were able to get out and explore the city and walk along the Malecon on the river front .The Malecon is a promenade or boardwalk of about two-miles along the Guayas River. When we arrived we were welcomed quickly by the reception staff. We quickly went through the formalities of form filling and having passports photocopied and then were taken to our room with the cases and then the porter showed us around the room before leaving with his tip.The reception area was large and...Read More

The Malecón 2000 GuayaquilOn our way back from the Galapagos islands we spent a night in Guayaquil on our way down to Santiago in Chile. We were determined to make our way to the recently renovated Malecón for our evening walk. The Malecón 2000 is a lovely riverside board walk or promenade which had a huge facelift for the year 2000. The Malecón goes for around two and a half kilometres along the side of the Guayas River following the path of the original Simon Bolivar board walk.I wasn't really expecting much from Guayaquil because my husband had visited the city about thirty years ago and kept telling me it was a dump so I was pleasantly surprised by the tr...Read More
