Halloween in Sleepy Hollow

An October 2012 trip to Sleepy Hollow by Cindy Grant

Quote: Imagine spending Halloween in Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Headless Horseman! There are many Halloween themed activities to choose from, but this is a great destination any time of the year, since it's just 30 minutes north of NYC.

Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate

The hilltop mansion was home to four generations of Rockefellers, and was built by John D. Rockefeller. Tours begin at Philipsburg Manor, where you board a shuttle to the estate. A beautiful place to spend several hours, and tour the massive mansion.

Van Cortlandt Manor

Attraction | "The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze"

Quote:
Probably more famous for its Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze in October, the grounds and buildings are full of pumpkin displays numbering in the thousands. The staff begins work well before Halloween to get these displays set up, and they are beautiful and gruesome at the same time! The grounds are parklike, and beautiful to stroll around, and there are people in period costumes. Well worth a visit.

Check website for hours, dates, and entrance fees.

The Tarrytown Farmers Market is located at Patriots Park, on Route 9, in the little downtown area of Tarrytown. I visited in the fall, so I'm not sure if this is an all year long thing, or just seasonal. When I visited in June, I didn't notice it being there. A great chance to mingle with the residents and pick up produce.

Open on Saturdays, 8:30 - 1 pm.

A beautiful example of a gothic revival mansion, and probably most famous as the inspiration for the series "Dark Shadows". It costs $5 to walk along the beautifully manicured grounds and along the river. A great place to see the sun set over the Hudson River.

Sunnyside was Washington Irving's home in Tarrytown. There are beautiful pathways for walking with beautiful views of the Hudson River, especially at sunset, and the guides dressed in period clothes will fill you in on Irving's past and the stories he wrote.

Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse

Attraction | "The 1883 Lighthouse"

Quote:
This is also a great place to photograph the Lighthouse with the Tappan Zee Bridge behind it, especially at night. But the park closes at dusk, and you would need to be parked outside the gate and walk in. Over its 78 years, there have been 12 keepers and their families living here. The light was automated in the 50s. Park inside Kingsland Point Park, and check the website for tour times and dates. Adult $5, child $3.

Located at the southern entrance to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. No tours of the church are given right now, check on their website to see if this changes. Worth a visit to see the 3 acre churchyard, very picturesque and has older graves. There is also someone selling themed merchandise just outside the gate so you can pick up a souvenir.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Attraction | "Searching for the Headless Horseman"

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Photo, Sleepy Hollow, New York
Quote:
While the average person would be happy with an hour long lantern tour, my visit to the cemetery was for something different - night photography and searching for the Headless Horseman. Seven other people and I were locked in from 6 pm until 2 am under a full moon. You couldn't have asked for better atmosphere! Not as creepy as you would imagine, but it is a cemetery and it was dark, so it was a little creepy. We each separated and did our photography, keeping a watchful eye out for the Headless Horseman. I found him standing quietly among the mausoleums in the older part of the cemetery, perhaps resting after taking someone's head! Grocery stores

Story/Tip

Quote:
Some of the restaurants in the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow/Elmsford/White Plains area are expensive. If you have a microwave and refrigerator in your hotel, stop by one of the grocery stores:

C-Town is located at 114 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. It is a little more upscale, but has a food bar and some hot food selections.

Super Stop and Shop is located at 610 White Plains Rd. in Tarrytown, and is the more traditional grocery store.

Caravela

Restaurant

Quote:
If you are looking for something different for dinner, try Caravela for great Portugese food; but plan to treat yourself as this restaurant is pricey. Portions were huge, we had a $25 steak and a $32 rack of lamb. Both were prepared perfectly, the staff was attentive, and the atmosphere was great.

One of the few Greek Restaurants in the Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown area. They have all of your Greek favorites and American dishes to pick from. We had the Greek salad with the moussaka, it was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. We couldn't decide what we wanted and eventually ordered a great margherita pizza; it was perfectly prepared. One of the more reasonably priced restaurants in the area.

Very convenient location to the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow area, and the Tappan Zee Bridge. Inside pool, fitness center, Starbucks coffee, and a Bistro. Staff is very attentive, and quickly addressed the only problem I encountered - the maid kept forgetting to clean my room. I've stayed here twice, and am very satisfied.
