This place was recommended by our guide as a good place for us to eat. He told us that this was a good restaurant, not the cheapest but was good quality and genuine Ecuadorian food. The other bonus was that it was just a few blocks walk from our hotel. The hotel and this restaurant are in the new part of town which is less interesting but there are plenty of bars and places to eat. This was in a small square and we could chosen from a dozen or more places to eat or have a drink. It certainly wasn't the biggest or grandest looking place and in fact we were not sure if it was even open initially but we tried the door and even though there were no other customers a man welcomed us in and assur...Read More

Hotel Reine IsabelAmazonica QuitoOn our recent South America trip we spent a few days in Quito and stayed in this hotel. WELCOMEThe check in was quick and efficient and we were escorted to our room with our bags. Once in the room the porter showed us the lights and other bits before leaving with his tip.THE ROOMThe room was huge with a small sort of extra bit with two arm chairs just as you come in. There was also a low table with a telephone on it and nothing else in there at all. Throughout the entire room were hard floors, the main room and anti chamber are wood while the bathroom was ceramic tiles. The main room was a very good size with ...Read More

Basílica del Voto Nacional, Quito We spent a morning in the old town of Quito and this building was the first we visited. It has a rather strange name as the translation is ,' the Basilica of the National Vow' but it is also known as the Catedral Consagración de Jesús or the Basílica de San Juan. Whatever you chose to call it this building is the Roman catholic church or cathedral central to Quito. This is a beautiful neo Gothic looking building. In fact it is the largest neogothic basilica in the New World. It is really beautiful and reminded me rather of the Notre Dame in Paris from the outside. Although it looks really old it is in fact not that old. Constructio...Read More

Attraction | "Metal Madonna"

El Panecillo, QuitoAs part of our tour of Old Town Quito we visited this hill and its huge statue. The hill is El Panecillo which means small bread in Spanish because the hill looks like a small loaf. It is a volcanic hill and is about 200 metres high. However you have to remember that Quito is already high so the hill is actually 3,016 metres above sea level so pretty high for anyone with altitude problems. From the town below this statue can be seen standing proudly over the city. It is huge and represents the Madonna not an angel as you might think from her wings. She is an Apocalyptic Virgin because of her unusual wings, presumably to escape the Apocalypse when it happens....Read More
