The Lake – The lakeside restaurants are wonderfully tranquil spots to watch the world go by, particularly the morning and evening ‘rush hour’. Take a boat out at first light and head towards the dam where the mountain views are at their best. Sarangkot – The views of the Annapurnas and the outlying valleys are great (clouds permitting). From here you explore the maze of paths back down to Lake Fewa and Pokhara. We walked north-east along the ridge from Sarangkot, then headed down towards the far end of the lake. Villagers very helpfully pointed out the way back to Pokhara, even when we weren’t lost. For the less active, take a taxi almost the whole way to Sarangkot w...Read More

Hotel Fewa

Hotel

With the intention of a mid-range splurge we thought this would be the place, but found it overrated and overvalued. The older rooms looked tired and uncomfortable, and did not seem worth the $20 asking price, or even $15 even staying more than a few nights. To be fair, they offered to look after our packs even having said it was not what we were looking for.

Hotel Barahi

Hotel

Quote:
Hotel Barahi was not very enticing. The cheaper rooms had no mosquito rooms; these apparently not being a problem in Pokhara, yet the more expensive rooms did have screens although inadequately fitted. With no fan, you would have to rely on clanky individual a/c units.

Down the road with Pyramid Restaurant on the corner – with a very pleasant garden and clean, well-presented rooms, this was a very pleasant option. 700rs for a double with private bathroom.

Further on down the road with Pyramid Restaurant on the corner, on the right. Advertised as under Nepali-German Management due to the owner’s son having married a German, this was a very quiet location. Rooms and bathrooms were spotless (with solar heated water) and comprehensively screened, apart from the bathroom. $12 a night in the slow start to the season, as the only guests for the first 4 nights.

At the damside end of Lakeside, past Sacred Valley Inn – recommended to us by a Canadian couple, this looked very pleasant from the outside.

Slightly less ‘designed’ than Boomerang Restaurant this was our favourite for an early morning curd breakfast watching the lake come to life, and coffee in the late afternoon watching the return boat journeys.

Opposite Tea Time Restaurant – excellent vegetarian Indian food in a minimal environment. Large helpings. If you’re tiring of dhal bhat, the Punjabi version is a pleasant variation.

The lakeside setting for this restaurant is unbeatable, and the helpings of non-Nepali fare are huge and certainly a value for the money e.g. pancakes, burgers etc.

This little restaurant had good European dishes (lasagna, moussaka, burgers etc), and is in a great position for people watching from the front tables on lazy days.

Great pizza...well, it's all relative after a couple of weeks in Nepal. The Nepali chef apparently worked in Italy for years. The happy hour cocktails were rather watered down though.

Once Upon a Time

Restaurant

Similar to many of the restaurants in Pokhara, with the standard lasagna, pizza, burgers etc. The macaroni cheese with tuna was deliciously rich and creamy.

Not being big walkers, and with only a 2 week holiday, we were undecided about trekking. Once there, it seems very much a ‘must do’ in many people’s minds. If undecided like us, do consider the following before being talked into it by some evangelical trekker. The terrain – many of the trekking agencies described the treks as easy or flat, something is somewhat relative to a Nepali! Try to look at a map with the contour lines to understand the trek you are undertaking, or ask for some photos. Several travellers confided in us that they found trekking hard going, and found pleasure in the sense of achievement on completion rather than the trek itself. The he...Read More
