This apartment was a bit of a contrast to the House Boninova in Dubrovnik. It was a fairly recent apartment block in a new development of upper Makarkas. We found it easily enough and there was good car parking facilities just outside the entrance. We rang the doorbell and in a short while a young woman opened the door for us and welcomed us in with a broad smile. She spoke reasonable English so everything was straight-forward. It was a long haul up to the third floor and so this apartment is not for you if you’re not prepared to be a mountain goat for a night! There were 50 stairs to climb to our top floor apartment. As we finally reached the top floor she showed us into the bedroom. It w...Read More

Our overnight stay in Makarska was only built in to give a resting point between Dubrovnik and Split so any sites here were bonuses. We hadn’t researched the town, but as the apartment was only a 10 minute walk away from the centre we thought we’d check it out. The owners of the apartment had suggested that "Jez" was a good local restaurant (see separate review) and so that was where we would finish our exploration of the town.It turns out that settlement in Makarska dates back to early in the 4th century and had a strong naval force based there in the Middle Ages and was strongly influence by the Venetians in the century from 1680. However, I can’t say that we were particularly aware of i...Read More

The restaurant Jez was recommended to us by the family at the apartments and it looked decidedly swish when compared to many of the restaurants along the promenade of the town. The prices were highly competitive and after a very warm welcome by the staff of the restaurant we were seated at a comfortable table in a semi-covered section of the restaurant. As I sat at the table gently rubbing a new mosquito bite the waiter came over and asked if I was having trouble. I explained that the little blighter was causing some irritation at which point he went across to an outdoor herb garden, plucked a few leaves of mint, returned to the table and rubbed the mint on the bite. After a matter of sec...Read More

What a nightmare to find! Thankfully the SatNav guided us close to the apartment but we were left hanging looking for 2b, which turned out to down a small road at the side of a school. When we finally negotiated our way to the apartment’s entrance, parking the car in a good safe area just outside the apartment, there was no sign of any real activity. My wife had hounded down a resident who was on her way to the apartment and I had managed to find the same women at the rear of the apartment and also inside the place. She was clearly the only person there so we made use of our mobile (thank goodness for modern technology) to call the agency who In turn contacted the owner to agree a meet time...Read More

When we finally got established in our studio apartment in Split we decided that we’d investigate the nearby Marjam Forest Park. It was literally at the top of the road, a less than ten minute walk away. We made the steady climb up to the entrance, but just before the entrance we stopped off to take some photos of the great view across Split and its immediate environs. The Marjan Forest Park is a public park and entrance is free although I guess many tourists would happily pay a small entrance fee just for the great views across the Adriatic Sea. I have to confess that I was quite grateful for the fact that there were plenty of seats on route, because the climb to the top is quite steep an...Read More
