Stadion Narodowy (National Stadium)

Attraction | "A State of the Art Stadium"

The National Stadium in Warsaw is definitely an improvement on the old 10th Anniversary Stadium which was still standing when I first arrived in Warsaw to live over 6 years ago. I didn’t see a football match there ever but I did used to visit the market that took place there every Saturday morning. It certainly used to be a den of iniquity where you could buy most things knocked off from all sorts of scoundrels. I remember being a bit scared walking round as there were some dodgy characters.I’m not scared to walk around the spanking new stadium that can be seen from many places in the city. My favourite views of it are from Poniatowski Bridge and from Castle Square in the Old Town. I haven...Read More

Attraction | "Watch out for those cyclists!"

Poniatowski Bridge is one of the prettiest bridges in Warsaw due to its neo-Renaissance towers, balustrades and pavilions that were erected in 1907-13. It isn’t often I walk the whole length of it as this isn’t in my part of town and I usually travel over it by tram when going to visit Skaryszewski Park or to Saska Kępa. You also pass over the bridge to get to Rondo Waszyngtona and the newly built National Stadium.Yesterday I did walk across the bridge and also up the steps of the first tower across the road from the stadium. The views of the stadium from this point are excellent and you are able to view it in its full glory. The bridge and viaduct are named after Józef Poniatow...Read More

Willy Brandt Statue

Attraction | "A Symbol of Reconciliation"

The statue dedicated to ex German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, is one I know very well and the small square where the statue is situated that also bears his name. It is situated in the Jewish Park which is just around the corner from where my son lives. The whole park used to be a lot bigger but for the last year or so developers have been building a brand new museum, The History of the Polish Jews and this large contemporary building has halved the size of the park. The brick statue with a brass relief showing Chancellor Brandt kneeling was erected thirty years after his apologetic gesture when he fell down as if in prayer in front of the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes which is still standin...Read More

Warsaw University Library Rooftop Garden

Attraction | "Warsaw's Famous Rooftop Garden"

Warsaw University Library Rooftop Garden Photo, Warsaw, Poland

Having visited the wacky building belonging to Warsaw University Library I couldn’t just go back home on the bus, I had to see the rooftop garden that I had heard so much about. The garden is comparatively new, opened to the public in 2002 and was designed by Irena Bajerska.I entered through the entrance closest to the library on Dobra Street, next to the underground parking lot. I could see students sat in the shade and a few walking around on both levels of the park. The garden is split into two gardens of which the upper area covers 2,000 square metres and the lower garden covers 15,000 square metres. At first glance I noticed that the lower garden had a serene quality about ...Read More

A couple of weeks ago my husband came home from a meeting to tell me that he had stumbled across a wacky piece of architecture that he thought I would love and promised to take me when he had some spare time. He kept his promise and last Monday we went to visit the library belonging to Warsaw University. As soon as we got off the bus I could see two very contemporary structures, one was a long, jade crescent shaped building with large windows, glass roof and many inscriptions carved into the side of the building. Shadows of passers-by made by the reflections of the sun on to the panes of glass were interesting to note as was the mechanical looking construction made from steel and painted a...Read More
