Our first night in Brunswick we had no plans for dinner. I looked over the available list of restaurants and there was nothing that really called my name. I wanted to walk out to dinner so we were even more limited. Taking Al’s preferences into account as well meant that no Indian, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean could be considered. Scarlet Begonias seemed to fit the bill pretty well and it was within walking distance. We headed out and as we crossed the town green Al spotted Asian Garden. Knowing that I love Chinese and Thai food he suggested that since they were so close we eat there. I gladly agreed. The interior is quite nice with a large bar. We were seated in a booth and were perusing...Read More

Brunswick, Maine is a quintessential college town and that college is Bowdoin. Part of the college is the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. Over 20,000 pieces make up the collection that ranges from Old Masters to pre-Columbian sculpture. The basis of the collection was the result of a donation from James Bowdoin III of European paintings, drawings and family portraits. In 1894 a building was constructed to hold the collection. Known as the Walker Building it is a memorial to Theophilus Walker donated by his nieces. The Walker sisters were collectors themselves and chose renowned architect Follen McKim to design the building. His firm, McKim, Mead and White was responsible for some of the mos...Read More

Frontier Cafe

Restaurant | "Amazing food and atmosphere"

Frontier Cafe is located in the former Cabot Mill on the Androscoggin River. It is a wide open space with a bar and a large open room with windows on two sides. It was a little intimidating when we walked in because it was so open and a little load. The tall ceiling and industrial feel are what causes the sound to reverberate so much. Some of the tables appeared to be communal and that alone was a bit intimidating but we were soon greeted and shown to a private table. With menus in hand and cold drinks, we were ready to take a look at this really interesting menu. I was in love almost immediately. They offered curried mussels which are one of my absolute favorite appetizers. Even bet...Read More

The Brunswick Inn

I chose the Brunswick Inn as our accommodation in Brunswick because I didn’t want to stay at a hotel, I prefer bed and breakfast. When I noticed all the awards that this one has won, I decided it was the place for us. I also mapped it out to see how far it was away from where my grandmother had lived on Mill Street and while it wasn’t next door, it was within a mile or so and seemed to me to be the perfect choice. The Inn has rooms in the main house and also there is a carriage house that is located to the rear of the property near the parking lot. I didn’t see any of the rooms there but they are available to view on the inn’s website. We were located on the 2nd floor right near the stairc...Read More

Searching for my grandmother

Story/Tip

I grew up knowing that Brunswick, Maine was where my grandmother went to work when she was only 12 years old and she worked there for 15 years. She came over 300 miles from her village in Quebec to help out her family. I found her on the 1900 census in Brunswick working as a weaver. It was inevitable that I would go in search of evidence of her time in Brunswick when I was going to be in the area. There is nothing I love more than a beautiful bed and breakfast. I was invited to do a 4 day Inn tour in Maine that took us to Kennebunkport and Rockland. Since Al is retired, I decided that we should extend our trip and so we planned to spend two days in Brunswick, Maine. I chose The Brunswick ...Read More
