For being arguably one of the most disgraced US Presidents in history, I found the story of Richard Nixon to be profound when considering the positive impact the man had on American politics and world relations. The butt of many jokes in the 1970's, and with the stink of "Watergate" tarnishing his legacy, there is little doubt in my mind today that this man had far more positive influence than negative.Upon arrival to the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum, our first stop was the theater where a movie telling Nixon's life story, from his birth in the house that sits on the museum property, to his rise and fall in American politics. Written off politically more than once, Nixon was a...Read More

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Library is located high atop the beautiful Californian hillside, befitting as the final resting place of 40th President of the United States of America. What is located in the Simi Valley hills, however, is something much more . . . more significant and poignant . . . than simply a historical archive of Ronald Reagan's legacy.Much of the story told at this Presidential Library is about the man Ronald Reagan, to include the roll Nancy Reagan played in inspiring him. Visitors learn about the Illinois born farm boy who aspired to a career in radio and television. The exhibit provides sound and video clips of Reagan doing the sports broadcasts...Read More

As I have done on many other vacations, I sought out a dining choice through Restaurant.com. Azar's Steakhouse & Sports Bar was the closest restaurant to our anticipated hotel. In reviewing their menu online, they seemed to be perfect for our night in Thousand Oaks. For just $2 I was able to purchase a $25 dining gift certificate on a $35+ meal expense. At the time I made the purchase of the gift certificate, I had no doubt we'd spend the required $35. As it turns out, we barely made it.When we were seated, our friend server offered to get us beverages. My sister opted to try a local brew from the Firestone Walker Brewing Company of Paso Robles, CA called "805" . . . the local ar...Read More

With the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley being the last thing on our itinerary before heading north to Monterey, the Hampton Inn in Thousand Oaks seemed to be an ideal location for our first overnight on the road. It was!Located within 10 minutes of the Reagan Library, it was very convenient especially since it was also near where we wanted to have dinner that evening, plus it was on the highway we'd be taking north the next morning. We asked for and were given a ground level room with two comfortable double beds. The room was right off the main lobby area and close to the ice machine and breakfast lounge. The furnishings were bright and appeared to be relatively new. T...Read More

After a good night's sleep, it was time to depart Thousand Oaks and head north to Monterey. Ultimately, we would end our day's travels in the San Simeon area.As we left the Hampton Inn around 6:30am we witnessed a couple of what appeared to be Federal agents gearing up for some sort of police action. They had their government issued black SUV parked in a side lot located between the hotel and a shopping area, as they were putting on their bullet-proof vests. As much as I would have loved to stick around to see what was happening, we continued to make our way to Hwy 101.The 101 became jammed with the morning rush hour around Ventura and on through to Santa Barbara. The ride ...Read More
