Windsor Great Park is almost 5000 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Windsor in Berkshire. On my most recent visit I travelled to Windsor by train and the park is in walking distance from the town centre. I cannot comment on parking, as the only time I tried to park anywhere near the centre it was almost impossible and over-priced. You may have better luck parking further out of town, around the other side of the park. Not all the park is open to the public, but of the part that is, it is free (except Savill Gardens). I only did a small part of it, and we walked slightly around the castle and up the hill to get the good views of the Castle. This route is known as The Long Walk and th...Read More

Windsor Royal Shopping

Quote:
Windsor Royal Shopping is a contemporary development built in the Victorian style railway station called Windsor & Eton Central (not W&E Riverside which is about 5 minutes walk away) and is located right in the centre of Windsor, opposite the castle. The shops here are generally a bit more ‘posh’ than those on the High Street. Shops include Pandora, Links, Jaeger, Jigsaw and Jo Malone. There are also a number of coffee shops and places to eat such as Carluccio’s and Café Nero. The area is all undercover, so you can dine ‘outside’ without being subject to the elements; however it isn’t always that warm to sit out in the winter, as the ends of the centre are open. If you enter ...Read More

Whilst in Windsor one Saturday, we decided to pop into the Christopher Wren hotel for a warm drink, whilst admiring the gardens and view of the river from their Terrace area. The hotel is located on a pedestrianised area on Thames Street by the river. Wren’s father, also a Sir Christopher Wren, was the Dean here, but it is unknown how much time Junior actually spent in Windsor, as he was mainly educated elsewhere. Much like Charles Dickens and Dick Turpin, places in Britain like to claim their links, however tenuous, to them. The hotel is a top end one, and the public areas inside were smart and tasteful, and the lavatories spacious, clean, and full of fancy paper towels and soaps. It s...Read More

During recent visit to Windsor and Eton we did a 40 minute boat trip on the Thames, departing from and returning to Windsor Promenade, close to the pedestrian bridge that allows to cross into Eton from Windsor. Tickets are £5.70 for adults and a very reasonable £2.75 for children for this trip. They also do a two hour one.The boat holds approximately 100 people and is likely to be full at weekends, but sailings seem to be fairly frequent. On board there are lavatories and a licensed bar selling refreshments. You don’t see a huge amount on this trip – you can see a small part of Eton College and the on-board guide will point out where past students used to swim. You also pass Winds...Read More

I recently had the opportunity to visit Eton College in Berkshire. It is open to the public on various days during the spring to autumn, although as a private group of over 14 people, we could do our own private tour, which we booked in advance. The school was founded by King Henry VI in 1440 for boys to learn Latin. In the early decades (and centuries) it only had about 100 students in one large classroom, but these days 1300 boys aged between 13 and 18 board here and study a slightly boarder curriculum!Buy your tickets at the visitor centre opposite and hope for a good guide. We had a former pupil and he was excellent and answering all our questions, and adding colour to his...Read More
