Restaurant | "A Great Brunch Stop in Cumbria"

It has become a tradition in our family to stop off for brunch at this coffee house whenever we go to the Lake District. The Hideaway Coffee House is situated in Lupton, between Kendal and Kirby Londsdale. One of the things that we love about it is that you feel as if you are miles from anywhere in a peaceful, country setting, but in fact the Hideaway is just 2 minutes’ drive from Junction 36 of the M6. It is not only conveniently located, but it offers fabulous food, which makes excellent use of fresh, local produce.Depending on the weather, you can decide to sit indoors, out on the balcony or in the garden. Whichever you choose, you will be treated to some fabulous views of...Read More

After a quick drink at The Fish Inn situated in Buttermere village, we drove approximately 1.5 miles to a parking point at Dalegarth Farm where we commenced our walk along the south western edge of Lake Buttermere. It was a glorious, sunny afternoon and the lakes and mountains looked majestic. As we walked we could make out High Crag, High Stile, Red Pike, Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike. My youngest daughter made a comment about how long the mountains have been here and how long they will still be here after we have gone and she wasn’t alone in being awe-struck by the magnificence of our surroundings. This was a jaw-droppingly beautiful walk for all of us.It is a 4 mile circu...Read More

Zeffirelli’s in Ambleside is one of my favourite restaurants and we always like to have a meal here around my birthday. There is an independent cinema attached to the restaurant and various deals are available combining food and films, but we have not taken advantage of this yet. My review will focus on the restaurant only but details of the cinema can be found on the website. We booked a table for 6.30, by which time the restaurant was already very busy. Our table was in front of an attractive glazed waterfall, right in the hub of the restaurant. The décor is stylish with soft lighting and a contemporary feel. Beautiful flower arrangements and impressionist-style artwork on the walls ...Read More

The Sundial is situated in Kendal, five minutes’ walk from the town centre. Just a 20 minute drive from Windermere and 30 minutes from Ambleside, this is a good base for a Lake District break, but also well-situated if you want to explore the Lancashire coast. The guest house is a late Victorian building with plenty of character. The owners, Sue and Andrew McLeod were welcoming and helpful and our stay was very pleasant. Our double room was on the ground floor. The en suite shower room was very small but clean. The shower was simple to operate and I experienced no problems controlling the temperature. Basic hand wash and shower gel were provided, but if you want more exc...Read More

Attraction | "A Stunning Free Attraction in Windermere"

Holehird Gardens Photo, Windermere, England

Situated in Windermere, these 10-acre gardens are maintained and developed by volunteers of the Lakeland Horticultural Society. The gardens are open to the public all year round and free of charge, although donations are encouraged. We had intended to stop here for just a short walk but were so enchanted by the place that we ended up staying much longer than planned. The gardens were created in the late 19th century but became badly neglected in the years that followed until the Lakeland Horticultural Society came to their rescue. It is certainly heartening to see what a team of volunteers can achieve when passionate about a project. Holehird Gardens are stunningly beautiful and whether...Read More

Attraction | "A Chocolate Workshop in Grasmere"

Cocoa Hearts Photo, Lake District, England
Quote:
My husband’s birthday present to me this year was a chocolate workshop at Cocoa Hearts, a quaint little chocolate shop in Grasmere village. Workshops run at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day and can be booked in advance. The cost is £15 per person. After a fairly busy Sunday, my daughters and I arrived at Cocoa Hearts for our 3 o clock workshop, looking forward to taking the weight off our feet after so much walking. Our host was very friendly and she made the whole experience very laid back, informative and fun. We were to make 12 chocolates of our choice, decorate them, present them in a gift box and take them home. Although I had assumed that the words "12 chocolates ...Read More
