When I planned for this trip several months ago, I wanted the "getting there" to be as much a part of my vacation as the wonderful things we had planned to do once I got to California. The Southwest Chief is one of two Amtrak routes that connects Chicago to Los Angeles. I chose this one because it was a bit more expedient plus, it covered some areas that are said to be interesting in terms of the landscape. It did not disappoint. My starting and ending point for my train adventure was Milwaukee, where I live. There is a commuter train that connects us to Chicago, offering several trips per day. I was able to take Amtrak's Hiawatha service which provided ample connection time at Chicago...Read More

The Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area is located about an hour from Barstow and 45 minutes from Apple Valley. Outdoor enthusiast come from all around southern California including Los Angeles and San Diego. This is a primitive camping and outdoor experience, so sissies and city slickers need to attempt such an excursion. We planned for a relaxing and fun Memorial Day weekend, with family and friends. Our camp area was the meeting place as one couple joined us overnight (Saturday and Sunday) while others came just for the day on Saturday. My sister & brother-in-law have a nice Fleetwood trailer that they bring up to this public access area that is part of the US...Read More

Joshua Tree National Park has several entrances including the West Station near Yucca Valley which we used coming in from Johnson Valley. The other two entrances are from Twentynine Palms (the "north" entrance) and southern from the Palm Springs area. Each of the three entrances have a visitor center which is a convenient stop to learn more about the park, shop for park related gifts and apparel and use the restrooms. As we entered, we were immediately in a vast area of Joshua trees and some single yucca's. Further into the park, there were "yucca rings" (a circular collection of yuccas) as well as an array of landscape features including large granite boulders, cliffs and vistas for vi...Read More

During our day trip to Joshua Tree National Park, we decided to exit the park to go find lunch in the town just outside the park entrance. While we did ask the ranger at the gate for suggestions, we decided to just drive down the main drag of Twentynine Palms (yes that is the town name) to find a bite to eat. We were not disappointed with our decision to stop in at the Carousel Cafe. The cafe itself, as well as the adjoining kitchen, is shaped like a carnival carousel. Inside, everything was of a carousel motif including the seating booths, mirrors, decorations and posters on the wall. The menu was classic American diner, serving breakfast all day! What could be better?Ther...Read More

After spending four days exploring California's coastal area, it was time to head inland for the high desert and ultimately my departure via Amtrak that evening. On Friday morning we got up and about around 8:00am. We went down to the Piedras Blancas beach area for one last visit to the elephant seal rookery. With our hotel room packed up, we were ready to hit the road for Apple Valley. The drive took us along the Pacific Coast for about six miles along Hwy 1 before taking the exit that would head east and away from the ocean. On a mix of two and four lane roads, the views were beautiful, especially as we crossed over the first mountain pass through the vineyards of wine country. Rows ...Read More

On my last night in California, my sister wanted to show me some "real" authentic Mexican dining so we planned for Chevo's. Our group included a total of six adults . . . family plus friends. The atmosphere was pleasant and the seating arrangement very comfortable. It did take a while for them to clear tables as about half of the place was empty but the tables were still littered with dishes from prior patrons. Once they had their "table for six" cleared, we were seated. It took a while for our server to take and bring out our beverage order. Most in our group had bottled cervezas, but a couple of us had soft drinks. During our meal, the server was on top of my diet coke refill(s) but...Read More
