Old Mission Santa Ines is both a historical landmark and a working Catholic mission located in Solvang. Being history buffs, we decided to take a quick visit, as it’s open for tours. We were going to enter the mission via the main entrance on Mission Drive, but we spotted a "back door" off the public parking lot of the information booth on Alisal Street in downtown Solvang. This "back door" took us past a few maintenance buildings and volleyball court of the Catholic school and to the rear of the main hall. We went inside for a peek, but being Saturday morning, there was a mass in service on and we didn’t want to disturb them and continued outside. On the rear side of the mission is a beaut...Read More

We decided on the Solvang Restaurant for breakfast, based upon the internet reviews, but also from staring through the front windows at the fresh aebleskivers being made. The Solvang Restaurant is supposed to be famous for their aebleskivers. The Solvang Restaurant is located on Copenhagen Drive, between Alisal Road and First Street. We arrived early enough to get a booth in the rear. There is a counter seating as well as booths along the walls. Just inside the front door is a wooden display case with aebleskiver pans for sale, as well as various jams and aebleskiver mixes. The pans have little round dimples where the aebleskiver batter goes.We were seated and our drink orders...Read More

Story/Tip

Solvang is a touristy little Danish community of around 5,000 residents in the middle of Santa Barbara County and we decided it would make for a great short trip for Memorial Day weekend. Much like the Chinese-American community has their Chinatowns and Italian-Americans have their Little Italy communities, the Danish have Solvang. Solvang’s "touristy" downtown area is quite small and easily to walk. The middle of downtown seems to be roughly centered about Mission Drive and Alisal Road and Copenhagen Drive. There is an information booth with a map and directory and public restrooms on Alisal Road between Mission and Copenhagen Drives. There are all sorts of restaurants, Danish-themed and o...Read More

Solvang Brewing Company is on the north side of Mission Drive, which is also called Highway 246. There’s parking directly in front as well as street parking. We entered to a very busy restaurant on a Friday evening. We were told that there was no restaurant seating, but the bar area had a few seats. We entered the bar area and were shown to a table near the bar. The menus featured a lot of brewpub favorites, as well as modified "Danish" dishes. The appetizers had typical favorites as nachos, fries, sliders, and a Danish sausage trio. The menu also had soups and salads, as well as sandwiches, including a "Danish" Reuben sandwich with Danish red cabbage instead of sauerkraut. I decided on th...Read More

We chose the King Frederik Inn as it seemed to be the lowest cost lodging inside downtown Solvang. We booked it online for 3 people (double beds plus a rollaway) for $178 all inclusive. Named after a line of Kings of Denmark, the King Frederik inn is on Mission Drive (which is also Highway 246.) There is ample parking on both sides of the King Frederik Inn. The odd thing is that the address for the Kng Frederik Inn is on Copenhagen Drive, which is the street to the south of it, but the entrance is on Mission Drive. The main office is small, with a counter, small lounge with a TV and computer with printer for guest use. There is a small counter with a toaster and coffee machines. There is a...Read More

A friend told us about Nojoqui Falls Park and it didn’t seem too far away from our eventual destination of Solvang, so we decided to go for a visit. In order to get to the park from Highway 101, exit on Old Coast Road, which is about 4.75 miles south on the 101 Highway from Junction 246. Old Coast Road leads past farm fields to Alisal Road, which will take you to Nojoqui Falls Park. The park is just a 6-8 minute drive off the Highway 101. Parking is free and there are several parking lots.Nojoqui Falls Park is a county park and quite large, with several distinct areas that one can rent for events. The signage was very clear and took us to a parking area with the entrance to Nojoqui Falls. ...Read More

Gaviota State Park Photo, California, United States
Quote:
Gaviota State Park is a California park located 33 miles north of Santa Barbara on Highway 101. We read some internet reviews and decided this was a good place to do some hiking. Going north on the 101, the Gaviota State Park entrance is about a mile before a roadway tunnel on the left hand side. There is a left lane turn pocket across Highway 101 to access it. Parking is $10 for the day, and paid at the manned entry kiosk. There is also a designated camping area as well as a boat launch, and these have their own fees as well.We parked in a lot next to the railroad overpass, which separates the park from the beach. The parking area is located adjacent to a camping area, where several group...Read More

Day One - breakfast in Santa Barbara on the way to Solvang

Tupelo Junction Cafe

Restaurant | "Nice Santa Barbara breakfast treat!"

Tupelo Junction Cafe Photo, Santa Barbara, California

We found the Tupelo Junction Café by looking online for places unique to Santa Barbara for a nice breakfast. Tupelo Junction Café seemed to fit the bill and is centered in downtown on State Street, only a few blocks from the 101 Highway. There is ample public parking on the street and in lots. We parked in a parking structure behind the Café on Anacapa Street that allowed for the first 75 minutes free. It’s a short walk through the block to the Café.We were greeted at the café and promptly shown to our table. We were given a breakfast and lunch menu, which looked to be a mix of southern favorites, such as beignets and pulled pork, as well as interesting dishes, such as pumpkin waffles. I ...Read More
