Perhaps I'm too easily impressed but I all too often find a great curry restaurant while on my travels. However, it's not too often that I find an exceptional one, but in the centre of Nottingham there is the exceptional Kayal. The Kayal is a small Midlands chain of Kerala style (Kerala is right on the southern tip of India) restaurants with branches in Leicester, Nottingham and Leamington Spa.After an afternoon of wandering, standing, sipping beer and listening to bands at the Dot to Dot Festival, we decided it was time for a break for an early dinner. Our Nottingham friends took us to Kayal located in the centre of town which they had been to a couple of times and really enjoyed. At the ...Read More

The venues for Nottingham's Dot to Dot were less dotted through the city but rather more grouped together in two main location clumps. After spending a bit of time at the Rock City/Assembly Rooms hub, we thought we would wander the 10 minutes or so across town to the Bodega, one of the main venues in the other "hub". The Bodega had music playing from the rather nicely done out downstairs bar and the hall upstairs. We had originally intended to go upstairs, but a young singer, Rhodes with a fantastic voice persuaded our ears to tell our legs to travel no further. The Bodega is another Nottingham music venue that has been going strong for over 20 years. I'm not sure how they do it, as music ...Read More

Another of our Dot to Dot Festival venues for live music was right next to the Rock City in Nottingham city centre, although the entrance is actually round up a side street to the rear of Rock City. The Rescue Rooms are a pleasantly furnished place with a good choice of lagers (although only one real ale) and a couple of pleasant patio areas where festival goers could enjoy the sun rather than be cooped up indoors for the whole day. There was a DJ playing (rather bizarrely given that 90% of the attendees were under 30) Baby Love by the Supremes when we passed by. Perhaps it was meant to be "post ironic"? Beyond the rather nice and fairly large outdoor space there are three main areas to ...Read More

Story/Tip

At my advanced age 30 years after my first gigging experiences, you might think going to see live rock music is something mostly beyond me (bar perhaps the odd 1980s Human League revival tour). While to be fair the thought of the large outdoor 3 day festivals no longer appeal (it's the mud, toileting facilities and litter that I find most abhorrent), but one day extravaganzas with its mix of new bands to discover together with old favourites, still draw me in. At the end of the festival we can retire and lodge in a comfortable hotel and let the kids party 'til dawn elsewhere. One show we regularly attend is the end of May Dot to Dot Festival which has now been running each sprin...Read More

Attraction | "Rocking at umm Nottingham's Rock City"

Rock City Photo, Nottingham, England
Quote:
Nottingham Rock City is something of a national musical institution as so many of our famous rock bands have played here, but our visit to the venue as part of the Dot to Dot 2013 festival was my first occasion to see the place for myself. The venue has been rocking since 1980, which is a good lifespan for such places. In terms of the Dot to Dot festival, the Rock City was the monster venue of the city. All the headline acts played at Rock City as all the other venues were too small, and outside tickets were being exchanged for wrist bands to allow security to easily check who had paid to get in through their doors. Rock City itself is a rather sprawling development with a coup...Read More
