After our boat trip, we were ready for a bite to eat. Act V is located on Sheep Street, a short walk from the riverside and close to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and popular museums such as Tudor World and MAD (The Museum of Art and Design.)Act V is a cross between a tea shop and an art gallery. Many limited edition paintings are displayed on the walls, several of which I would have loved to have purchased if I’d had over £200 to spare. I had to content myself with wandering around the gallery whilst waiting for my food to be served. In addition there is a good selection of unusual greetings cards for sale. With a friend’s birthday approaching, I purchased a lovely card of a collagra...Read More

Attraction | "Taking to the water"

On the second day of our visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon, we decided to make the most of some rare sunshine and have a boat trip. At Avon Boating you can hire rowing boats, punts, canoes and motor boats but, as we are not blessed with nautical skills, we opted for one of the public river cruises on an Edwardian passenger launch instead. The public river cruises cost £5.50 for adults and £3.50 for children under 14, with family tickets available for £16.50. We boarded the boat next to the Bancroft Gardens close to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Because of the warm weather, we sat on the unsheltered part of the boat. On a cooler day I would have opted for the covered area, or if the sun had...Read More

Attraction | "Support a Worthwhile Cause"

My mum has been supporting the charity, Redwings, the largest horse sanctuary in the UK, for many years now and has ‘adopted’ several horses on behalf of her grandchildren. On my recent weekend in Warwickshire, I was pleased to learn that one of Redwings’ three visitor centres is located just 10 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, so I was keen to see what it was like.Entry to Oxhill Visitor Centre is free, although you are encouraged to leave a donation after your visit. Once you realise just how much admirable work this charity carries out, I think you would have to be quite tight-fisted not to do so. You find out all about the resident horses, why they are there and how they came to ...Read More

The Bear

Restaurant | "A Tasty Lunch at The Bear"

The Bear is situated next to The Swan’s Nest hotel on the banks of the river, close to the centre of Stratford-Upon-Avon. After our trip to the Butterfly Farm we were feeling peckish, so decided to have an early lunch. The Bear opens at 12 noon. We were probably lucky to arrive at that time as we noticed that a large number of tables were reserved for 1 p.m. We were given a table for two by the window, which meant we could look out at the riverside, watching the boats go by.The pub has an Old English tavern feel to it, dating back to 1662, but the décor is a combination of traditional and modern, with dark wood panelling, a pewter-topped bar, stylish leather sofas and an unobtrusive fl...Read More

Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm

Attraction | "Watching the Butterflies Flutter By"

Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm Photo, Stratford-Upon-Avon, England

This butterfly farm is 5 minutes on foot from Stratford-Upon-Avon town centre. Adult tickets are £6.25. Children’s tickets are £5.25 with free admission for those under 3. Family tickets cost £18.50.The butterfly farm is an indoor attraction, so ideal for rainy days. In the flight area we discovered a tropical haven with pools and waterfalls where we were able to observe many different species of butterfly at close range. It is quite warm in the butterfly house and I found I had to take my hat and jacket off as I walked around, but it was not so hot that it became unbearable. The refreshing splash from the water features seemed to cool it down a bit. We visited on a cloudy day so I ...Read More
