I really do enjoy making day trips to Green County, Wisconsin. This would be my third since June 2012. I have found this area of the state to offer so many opportunities to explore the rich history and culture that makes Wisconsin unique to other US states. Each time I've made the trip, I have made it a point to explore something new while also making time to visit what are fast becoming "old friends" along the way.I have also found ways to make the 100 mile journey a little different each time, providing for new sights to be discovered. On this day, it wasn't long before I stumbled upon a surprise . . . the Glacial River Trail Covered Bridge. Located along WI Hwy 26 heading in toward...Read More

If you have read some of my other "Wisconsin Series" journals, you know that recently I've been exploring the history of cheesemaking in Wisconsin, to include taking a number of tours of local cheese factories around the state. Unless you live in SE Wisconsin or have visited Green County during Monroe's Cheese Days Festival, you have probably never heard of Decatur Dairy or their many cheese products. Probably one of the best kept secrets is that Decatur's cheesemaking capabilities and reputation are world renowned. If you buy products with brand labels such as Boar's Head, Sargento or Pace . . . there is a pretty good probability that the cheese was actually produced here at Decatur Dairy in rural...Read More

The City of Brodhead, Wisconsin organizes an event called "Tour the Farms Day" held annually in early spring (May). I had no idea about the event before reading the Travel Wisconsin's Facebook page posting earlier in the week. Good to see the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is doing a good job to drive visitors to rural and lesser known areas of our state. The media release of information included four farms that would be open to the public for tours. I choose two farms to visit, mostly due to location and my other plans for the day. I was very fortunate that the first that I toured was the Scotch Hill Farm. Selected because it is in close proximity to the Amish Bakery I enjoy and plan...Read More

As I planned for my return trip to Green County, Wisconsin I was happy to learn that the Swiss Historical Village had opened for the 2013 season. As with many sights in and around rural Wisconsin communities, they close for the winter and reopen once spring arrives. That said, here it is the second weekend of May and frankly, we are STILL waiting for spring to arrive. I was not deterred however, by the rainy and cool April like weather!First and foremost, the Swiss Historical Village is a tribute to the early settlers who came over from "Old Glarus" Switzerland in the mid 1800's to form what would be known as "New Glarus" in the rich farmland in southern Wisconsin. The village itself is...Read More

I must admit, I originally bought a gift certificate from Restaurant.com for this place solely because it was near where I had planned on doing a weekend trip last summer. With my plans changing slightly, it did not get used, so it's been in my travel folder for nearly a year. I was happy that I would finally get to use the discount on my day trip to Green County. The New Glarus Hotel is a historical landmark, having been built my Swiss immigrants in 1853. It sits right in the middle of town, approximately two blocks for the train station. It would make sense that this would be the ideal location for the village hotel & restaurant. Many ancestors from those original settlers still ...Read More
