Although South Yorkshire and the area around Sheffield is only 20 miles or so away from my home we don't tend to visit the area much as it has a poor reputation. Many of the towns are unremarkable poor mining areas with little of note for the tourist beyond remembering to lock your car doors as you drive through.Of course, it is wrong to tar a whole region with the same brush and there are also some pretty villages in the area on the edge of the peak district; an area of moorland around Sheffield. When our friends described a pretty village with an antique shop which often sells the odd bargain, we decided to visit with them one sleepy Sunday. Cawthorne on the edge of Barnsley ...Read More

Hussains is a small Indian restaurant very near and handy to the hospital. If ever I end up for a stay I’m rather hoping some kind soul might get me a takeout from here, as I’m sure it would tempt the most hidden of taste buds. Hussains is run by the same people who operated its former incantation, Street. Unfortunately, while Street was very nice it was also a rather nice price and eventually it appeared to run out of steam. That Hussains still has no credit card facilities on offer perhaps gives an indication of how bad things had got. Fortunately Hussains is a rather different beast to Street offering a more traditional 2 or 3 course curry experience of high quality but at v...Read More

After a distinct shortage of food choice at our outdoor gig in Leeds, we returned to our hotel at around 10:45pm with me seriously in need of a little sustenance. While my beloved at that point was beyond food, I remembered a Leeds institution that would be open and nearby our hotel. The Shabab restaurant has been open for as long as I can remember, and is in a large building just downstairs from the train station in what is known as the "dark arches" a catacomb of Victorian built tunnels under the train station. In fact, it first opened in 1973, and their website gives the startling fact that they believe they have served around 4 million meals over the past 40 years. The word shabab mean...Read More

Each year in May the city of Leeds is host to a weekend of music and other events. This year, held over two days, the main music shows were held in the city's millennium square behind the grand Victorian art gallery on the Headrow in the centre of town. The first day comprised of a series of minor but up and coming bands which were available to go and see free of charge, and on the second day were three bands, with headliners, The Vaccines but with a £20 charge. The show was on for 6 hours from 4:30 – 10:30 pm.My review is primarily about the venue, but the Vaccines are one of the best rock acts out there at the moment; just excellent. I was grateful that the music was good as despite the...Read More

For our weekend visit to Leeds to see rock band The Vaccines play live, we decided that we would skip the fun of the lively drunks on the night train back to our hometown and stay over using a cheap deal of £25 for the room at Leeds Central Travelodge. Before setting off, I checked on the internet for the address and we strolled across town to their Leeds Central Vicar Lane Travelodge, only to be told there were two Leeds Central Travelodges, and the one we needed was near the train station from whence we had arrived. I wish they had called it Travelodge Leeds Train Station or some such so as to provide an adequate distinction between the two. This Travelodge Leeds Central is a...Read More
