Restaurant | "touristy and not worth it"

I actually managed to visit this place twice. It is right is a little square on Rua do Franco, one of the streets from the cathedral and is full of restaurants and touristy shops. The first time, it was really for a glass of wine, as their seats were in the sun and in the little square it was fairly sheltered from the wind that day so it was a pleasant place to sit out. As such it was great to people watch for a pleasant afternoon of relaxing entertainment. But knowing it was on the main touristy street I had no intention of ever eating a meal here, as it probably meant less quality for more money. However, having bumped into a few other pilgrims later that evening, none of us had any reall...Read More

Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela

Attraction | "Amazing views and perspective"

Having met so many different pilgrims along the camino, you tend to get used to information being shared, and when it came to Santiago it was no different. Two American ladies I had met told me that they had done the roof top tour of the cathedral and highly recommended it. So the next morning I went to find out about booking a ticket. The tickets are bought below the main entrance to the cathedral, and I was told they had a tour in english at 7pm that evening. I also passed the information onto another pilgrim I had met, and he decided to book a ticket as well. So I appeared back at 7pm that evening and quite a crowd of us gathered. Half of the group for the tour were pilgrims I had met walking...Read More

Restaurant | "Nice"

Having enjoyed a fair few pilgrim menus over the last few weeks the theory for the few pilgrims we accumulated was we felt like treating ourselves. Thankfully one of our gathering had done some research and had read that Dezaseis was good. I had read about it also in preparing my trip but only knew it was outside the immediate surroundings of the cathedral and didn't really remember where it was. However it was only a few minutes walk from the cathedral, and was in fact on one of the streets the Camino Frances comes in to the city on close to the Porta do Camino and the last proper traffic road I crossed just a few days before as I came into the city. Being pilgrims used to eating earlier than m...Read More

Hotel | "Close to the Cathedral"

I arrived in Santiago de Compostella before 10am, and knew that this hotel was right beside the cathedral, in Praza da Azabacheria. It does not have a big flashy sign but that seems it is primarily aimed at the growing number of pilgrims many of whom know this place exists. It looks a very grand building from the outside, as it was and still is a monastery. The main reception is a fair walk from the main door, passing through a cloister. There was one man on reception which seems to be the standard for this hotel. The top floor of the hotel is specifically for pilgrims and is supposed to have even simpler rooms and so are cheaper, but there were none left when I arrived, so I booked one of the normal ...Read More

I had one night of luxury in Santiago after walking on the camino from Leon, it was supposed to be a treat. I walked into reception before 10am. I was clean as I had reached Santiago de Compostela the day before, but I still looked like a scruffy pilgrim with a rucksack. Having met a few pilgrim staying in the Parador who commented on some on the staff being a little snotty with them, I was kind of expecting something similar. However, I could not be further from the truth. The staff at reception were delightful and welcoming. My plan had just been to drop my rucksack off and check-in properly later on, however, the man on reception went out of way to find a room that was ready for me and changed the ...Read More
