Attraction | "Grossly Fascinating Museum"

In our constant search for unusual things to do in London, we may have reached the all-time most unusual. The Huntertarian Museum is located at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and if I had to compare it to something, it would be the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia. According to my fascinated granddaughter Jeanna, that was the grossest museum ever and I have to agree. The Huntertarian is right up there when it comes to gross. Having said that, the reason Joe wanted to go here was for the art. Yes, I know, he knows about every obscure piece of art in the world and the fact that the museum has a Holbein, was an irresistible attraction. The good news is, entrance is free. The bad news ...Read More

Story/Tip

Tea at the Orangery Photo, London, England
Quote:
After visiting Buckingham Palace we took a cab to the gate of Kensington Garden. I have to admit, considering the amount of pain I was in; I was not too enthused to have to walk through the park up to the Palace. There really isn’t an alternative that we knew of so I bit the bullet and did the walk. This is not a terrible walk normally. It is uphill but not too steep and for healthy, two legged people, this is easy. By the time we got to the palace, I really needed to get off my leg for a bit and this coincided nicely with tea time at the Orangery. I will issue a warning; tea at the Orangery is expensive, very expensive about $40 a head. There is a small casual café in the Palace but there...Read More

Attraction | "Amazing Art and Tacky Gifts"

Our first full day in London was dedicated to visiting the palaces. By that I mean Buckingham and Kensington. Actually, if you are familiar with London at all you know that Buckingham Palace is not open for tours in January but the Queens Gallery is open. This was where we began our day. Part of our deal at the hotel was that we received a bus/subway pass. Since my knee was in pretty bad shape, we opted for the bus and it dropped us off just a couple of blocks from the museum. I have to vent a little here. I have been coming to the Queens Gallery for years and the store has always been a favorite of mine. I was shocked and dismayed to see that her majesty has now climbed on the tacky touri...Read More

Since we have been to London so many times, we wanted to try to visit some places that we have never visited before. One of the sites that has been high on my list for quite some time is the Charles Dickens Museum. Little did I realize that I could not have picked a better time to visit. The museum was just reopened after an extensive renovation and from what people have told me, it has never looked better. We opted to take a cab which dropped us off at the front door. You can obviously take the bus or tube but there is not a close choice so there will be walking involved. This is a neighborhood we have never visited before and we thought the small extra cost was well worth the convenience...Read More

London is my favorite city to visit. Somehow it never gets old. In January 2013, Al, Joe and I headed out of Boston for a 10 day trip to London and Dublin. I did a lot of research trying to find a great hotel deal. Great when it relates to London means less than $200 a night and in a great neighborhood. I really wanted to have a little luxury but hours of looking really didn’t give me anything in my designated price range. I hate to say I settled, because really I have always wanted to stay here, but I knew I was trading boutique for location when I booked us into the Strand Palace. The deal included the buffet breakfast, a daily off peak transport pass and Sunday evening dinner. To keep t...Read More
