Restaurant | "Perfect New York style pizzas"

I am invariably a little wary of pizza places in Delhi and its satellite towns: too many of them have gone so far in their attempt to cater to ‘Indian’ tastes that chicken tikka, lots of spice, green chillies, paneer and other completely un-pizza like ingredients have become more the norm than the exception. We had gone to the Arjun Marg Shopping Mall for lunch because this was the address for a restaurant we particularly wanted to try—a lovely Italian place which used to originally operate in Delhi, but has since shut down. We arrived, in time for a lateish lunch, only to find that the restaurant we’d been intending to visit was closed for renovation. It was too late—and we were too h...Read More

Dimsum Bros

Restaurant | "Decent dimsums, dreadful desserts"

My husband and I are dimsum freaks. Give us a restaurant that serves an interesting array of dimsums, and we’ll happily eat only dimsums, no main course. We were, therefore, quite pleased when Dimsum Bros opened—because we figured a place that was named after dimsums probably did serve dimsums. We visited Dimsum Bros on a Saturday afternoon. This restaurant sits on the third floor of Gurgaon’s Ambience Mall—high enough to be above the bustle and din of the rest of the floor, not too high to be totally secluded. The girl at the hostess’s desk outside ushered us in, and even though it was 2 PM, we found that except for a couple of tables, the rest of the restaurant was empty.Dimsum Bros is rath...Read More

Wokamama

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Gurgaon's best Pan-Asian restaurant? Perhaps..."

Wokamama Photo, Gurgaon, India
Quote:
While the name of this restaurant may bear a startling (and possibly deliberate?) resemblance to Wagamama, make no mistake: this is something quite different. Wokamama does (like Wagamama) specialise in Oriental food, but it’s a very different kettle of fish—and it’s completely homegrown in India. This restaurant is part of a chain that includes other Oriental eateries, and since we’d already sampled—and liked—food from its partner restaurants in Delhi, we figured Wokamama might be worth a try.The approach to the restaurant is a little nondescript: it sits on the first floor of what looked like a fairly deserted little shopping com...Read More

Bernardo's

Restaurant | "By far the best Goan food in the NCR"

Bernardo's Photo, Gurgaon, India
Quote:
True, Goan food isn’t one of the most ubiquitous cuisines in restaurants in this part of the country. True, too, that most North Indians are completely clueless about Goan food. But there are a couple of Goan restaurants in Delhi, and we’ve mostly enjoyed eating at them. When someone mentioned that Bernardo’s, in Gurgaon, serves the best Goan food this side of Goa, we decided we had to check it out.The address we’d been given for Bernardo’s was B-242, at the DLF Super Mart-1; this, however, has now changed—the restaurant has shifted to another location, just a minute’s walk away, to A-236. Bernardo’s a tiny place, with glass windows looking out on small potted palms. Inside, the place is rem...Read More

Rockman's Beer Island

Restaurant | "Perhaps the beer's better?"

Rockman's Beer Island Photo, Gurgaon, India
Quote:
I’ve never been a drinker: just the occasional glass of wine or a liqueur, once in a blue moon, used to be fine with me. Then, several years ago, I had to give up drinking all alcohol for medical reasons. My husband (also never very fond of alcohol, except beer, which also he consumed only once in a while) gave up drinking too, in sympathy. Why then, you ask, did we go to a place called Rockman’s Beer Island? We were in Gurgaon’s Ambience Mall—one of the largest and most prominent in town—and were looking for a place to eat. Besides the food court and a few chain restaurants (which we’ve eaten at, in their Delhi outlets), there were few options, and none that really appealed to us. Wand...Read More
