Discovery World Museum located on Milwaukee's lakefront provides a hands-on learning opportunity for children from elementary school age, through high school and beyond. With 15 exhibits with learning labs throughout, this jewel on Lake Michigan is an amazing resource for hours of learning in a fun way.During my midweek visit, there were a number of school aged children participating in what appeared to be field trips with school teachers leading the learning, while parent chaperones managed "crowd" control and lunchtime oversight. The museum features several areas for exploration and learning. I spent the greatest amount of my time in the two floors housing the Reiman Aquarium....Read More

The Milwaukee Art Museum is celebrating its 125 anniversary, dating back to the founding in 1888 when Frederick Layton (of Layton Avenue fame) established the city's first art museum near Cathedral Square. Having gone through an evolution over the past 100 years, today this collection by Lake Michigan stands as the largest in Wisconsin and one of the best collections in the United States.Reportedly with over 40 collections and exhibits and more than 20,000 individual pieces, the Milwaukee Art Museum provides visitors with a history of humanity through the arts. Not just paintings or sculptures, but also through decorative arts, home furnishings and modern animation being used today by Ho...Read More

Attraction | "Not the Smithsonian but Still Worth the Time"

Having grown up in the Metro Washington, DC Area I must admit now as an adult to have been quite spoiled by the history that surrounded me. I can remember spending many summers as a teenager crossing the Potomac River from Virginia to go check out the various museums of the Smithsonian. Whenever we had family visiting from out of town, I was the unofficial family tour guide. I never missed an opportunity to go into the city!Living here in Milwaukee, I've only been to the Milwaukee Public Museum one other time, probably 12 to 15 years ago. From what I remember, not much has changed in terms of the main exhibits or the overall presentation of the people and animals that share this "thir...Read More

Attraction | "AKA "The Domes""

I debated as to whether or not to start a new entry here at IgoUgo since most everyone in Milwaukee and perhaps all of Wisconsin better knows this Milwaukee County Parks jewel as "The Domes" and not the more formal name "Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory". I opted to go with what's already here, however, when I saw that the Milwaukee County Parks list it more formally (http://county.milwaukee.gov/MitchellParkConserva10116.htm).The Domes is billed at Milwaukee's "living landmark" and is the oldest park in the Milwaukee County Park System. Our parks are nationally renowned and as a resident, I'm proud to know just how committed our primarily urban community is to the parks and recre...Read More

Restaurant | "Decent Fish Fry Choice on Milwaukee's NW Side"

Batzler's Trackside Inn Photo, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

After a week of being out and about in Milwaukee, we decided that dinner at a local Friday Fish Fry would be a good ending to a pretty decent week. Batzler's Trackside Inn is about five minutes from our house and yet we had never given them a try so that seemed to fit the bill perfectly.Built in the 1870's, the Trackside Inn was the gathering place for local farmers and rail workers. Given its location right on the train rails that connect Milwaukee with other Midwest cities, I can imagine this was quite the hopping place back in the day. Today, urban sprawl has engulfed it, and unfortunately the city's blight is also evident in the surrounds. That said, if you find yourself in the Ci...Read More
