Comfort Hotel Eisenach

The first time we chose to stay in this particular hotel (a couple of years ago) was because it was ideally situated for our purposes. We were traveling to Poland after flying to Franfurt/Hahn airport and it was a convenient distance to split our journey, and at a very competitive price. We must have been pretty satisfied with it as when we were planning a tour of Germany, we had no hesitation in using this hotel again. The hotel is located in a peaceful setting on the edge of farmland about half a mile from the Eisenach East junction on the A4 autobahn. It's very easy to find as it's well signposted from the exit ramp. On a quiet road, it is around a quarter of a mile or so from a sho...Read More

Wartberg Castle

Attraction

On the second day of our visit to Eisenach, very early in the morning, we visited WARTBURG CASTLE. The castle opens for business at 8.30 and I'd advise anyone going there to be "chappin' at the door" by that time. It gets extremely busy.Parking costs Euro3, and from the car park it's but a short stroll up the hill to the castle entrance. I used the term 'short stroll up the hill' in much the same way that I'd describe assailing the North Face of the Eiger as a pleasant pre-lunch scramble.Apparently, it's only 500 feet from the car park to the entrance. The trouble is, it's 500 feet vertically! I kid you not. It's not even a gentle slope, but fairly steep steps all the way. I was well...Read More

Buchenwald Concentration Camp

Going on holiday with me can be a thrill-a-minute, side-splitting, bundle-of-laughs...sometimes. Other times it can be a sedate, sombre and sober* experience.Germany has culture in abundance, scenery to take your breath away, some of the best beer in the world, and centuries of history to ponder over. Some of that history though, is rather uncomfortable and unpleasant, but then, so is much of the rest of the world's history (not to mention the present and I have no doubt, future).* There's a word you never thought you'd see in a proxy reviewAnd so it was that driving from Eisanach to Dresden, we decided to stop for a few hours at a little place near Weimar. We...Read More

Axxe Eliance Dresdner Tor Sud

Hotel | "Axxe Eliance Dresdner Tor Süd"

After leaving Eisenach, our next port-of-call on our tour of Germany was Saxony, and in particular, the area around Dresden. We wanted a hotel which would allow us to explore the surrounding area - perhaps take a detour into Poland or the Czech Republic, a visit to Saxon Switzerland sounded interesting too. We therefore decided on a motel just 6km from Dresden city centre, but with easy access to the autobahn system. Considering the Axxe Eliance Dresdner Tor SüdHotel Wilsdruff sits astride the A4 autobahn, access couldn't have been much easier. We were a little dubious of booking this motel as we thought noise might be a problem, but, apart from the proxamity(sic) to traffic, the locat...Read More

Ibis Augsburg Koenigsplatz

Hotel | "THE IBIS IN FUGGING AUGSBURG"

Quote:
When we were traveling from Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, to Strasbourg in France, we decided to split our journey and about two thirds of the way was Augsburg, conveniently enough. Augsburg is on the Romantic Road, a major tourist route in southern Germany, from Wurzburg - passing through many picturesque towns and villages before ending in Füssen (where the Disney castle is!)The hotel is situated in the centre of town, just a few hundred metres from both the rail station and the bus terminal. In fact, a 5 minute walk from the hotel brings you right into the heart of the pedestrian streets of the town centre. It's pretty easy to find. You leave the autobahn and follow the ring-road...Read More
