At the center of Shipshewana, you will not miss the Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery. A local tourist attraction, something that some feel creates a distraction from the natural beauty of this area, "Blue Gate" is part of the larger Riegsecker, Inc., a conglomerate of business interests featuring Amish goods and services. Blue Gate includes the restaurant & bakery as well as a theatre that plays host to concerts and musicals. To be honest, it is the efforts of such entrepreneurs that gives Shipshewana the undesirable label of "tourist trap". I read somewhere, maybe even here on IgoUgo, that Shipshewana is just a smaller version of Branson. ARGH . . . I surely hope not but I get their point....Read More

The Guggisberg Deutsch Kase Haus Cheese Factory located in Middlebury, IN was originally founded in 1979 by a local Amish man and was called "Deutsch Kase Haus" which translates to "German Cheese House". It was purchased in 2009 by Guggisberg Cheese, an Ohio company founded by a young Swiss immigrant Alfred Guggisberg in 1950 with local ties to the Amish farming community there. The Guggisberg Deutsch Kase Haus Cheese Factory in Indiana produces mostly Colby, Marble, Yogurt and other curd-type products. During my visit, they had two vats of Colby being made. It was nice to see mostly Amish and Mennonites working the store and factory. As I pulled into their driveway just before they open...Read More

It seems a bit strange to call a grocery store an "attraction" but the fact it, when you are traveling through the Amish communities throughout America, often they are just that . . . an attraction! For Yoder's Meat & Cheese Company, they even promote in their marketing materials "Tour Buses Welcome!" and "Restroom Facilities". You can't get any more touristy than that, now can you?The store itself is in a nice little strip shopping area in Shipshewana. With ample parking for whatever means of transportation you have (horse & buggy, auto or tour bus), visitors are welcomed to come in and just browse around or shop to their heart's content. For me I did a little of both....Read More

Story/Tip

If you've read some of my other travel journals from Wisconsin, you might know that I have become fascinated with the large 8' x 8' painted quilt squares found hanging on rural barns and buildings throughout Monroe County and other communities that have been organized by the local University of Wisconsin Extension Office. While driving into Shipshewana, I happened upon a barn quilt or two. What I didn't realize until that evening back at the hotel, LaGrange County (where Shipshewana is located) has an organized Barn Quilt Trail.According to their marketing brochure (found on the "attractions" rack inside my hotel lobby), there are 37 hand-painted quilt squares or murals to be f...Read More

As I planned for my overnight trip to Shipshewana, I checked out all of the lodging options. Traveling alone, my needs were pretty simple . . . safe, convenient, clean, free WiFi and at a bargain price. The Super 8 met all of my criteria!I was coming into Shipshewana from my full day's activities in Nappanee, IN so I wasn't sure what to expect checking in around nightfall on a Sunday evening. The young lady at the desk was very nice and especially accommodating since I was hoping for a room near an entrance. She was able to give me a first floor room, immediately next to the side entrance. Since it was a Sunday and they had very few guests, the room location was perfect as I didn't he...Read More
