One of our favourite theatre venues is the Lowry even though it’s something of a drag for us to get to and from there to our home. Perhaps that demonstrates that the Lowry is one of the best theatres in the area. The building itself also houses the Lowry gallery and showcases many of the best paintings by that gritty Northern artist LS Lowry. The building is a purpose built modern edifice and designed to help regeneration a former industrial area of inner city dockland. Along the way from the Theatre/Gallery is a shopping centre and about half a dozen chain restaurants to choose from; we usually grab a bite to eat here for convenience although the food choice is hardly exciting. A couple of times a year we visit the Lowry Theatre in Salford, near Manchester. The area is a redevelopment of dockland and these days contains both shops and restaurants in addition to the theatre and Lowry museum (dedicated to the works of the British painter). I tend to find "chain restaurants" offer fairly poor value and unexciting food, but there isn't too much choice at this part of town so we tend to bite the bullet. To soften the blow, there is the opportunity to get a stamp on your parking ticket allowing 6 hours free parking. This saves us £6 and gives us plenty enough time to have a quick wander around the shops, have a meal, and enjoy the show. The French styled Ca...Read More

Night and Day Cafe

Attraction | "Manchester's Night and Day"

Night and Day Cafe Photo, Manchester, England

I'm always on the lookout for new music, and when I heard that one of my current tips, Australia’s San Cisco, were performing at Manchester's Night and Day I just had to toddle along there after work to check out both the band and the venue. Night and Day is very close to Manchester city centre near Debenhams just a little way up Oldham Street past Leo's fish bar. It's the single width of a shop and quite unremarkable from the outside so keep an eye out for the place. Obviously, it is narrow and a lot longer inside. The venue is fairly typical for an indie music venue; very basic and rather scruffy, but clean enough. I walked past the man at the entrance by waving my ticket a...Read More

Travelodge Manchester Ancoats

I managed to snaffle a £19 a room Travelodge deal fairly last minute for my trip to see live music (Catfish and the Bottlemen and San Cisco – both excellent since you asked) in Manchester on a Monday evening. I adore the fact that I don't have kids and a bit of spare cash that allows me to go off on a work night for a different evening now and again. I had a couple of reasonable Manchester Travelodge hotels to choose from at that price but as I like the Manchester Northern Quarter area and that's where the band were playing, I concluded the most convenient and familiar place for me would be the hotel at Manchester Ancoats. The Ancoats Travelodge is on the main road directly opp...Read More

Crowne Plaza Airport

Hotel | "Very average Airport Hotel"

Crowne Plaza Airport Photo, Manchester, England

For the past couple of years we have been rather spoilt for our Manchester Airport Hotel as lastminute.com’s secret deal for £50-£60 has always been the rather nice airport Hilton. Alas the arrangement between the two organisations appears to have ended and so for our most recent trip to Spain we had to snag an alternative deal. The Manchester Airport Crowne Plaza at £69 for the room seemed about the best on offer. Unfortunately the comparison between the Crowne Plaza and the Hilton Hotel is stark although they are both about equally convenient for the airport. We found our room to be much smaller although the bed and TV were fine (heh what more do you want from an airport hotel?). The old...Read More
