One thing I've noticed whilst living in Poland, is that a lot of Poles seem to think along the same lines. So when a lot of my students told me they shunned Zakopane in favour of smaller nearby resorts, I wasn't totally surprised to find Zakopane quieter than usual. It was my third time in the mountain town, having been there sparing three decades (90s, 00s, 10s) - I cannot see a huge difference, other than the run-in from Rabka-Zrdroj being more built up, a dual carriageway running south of Krakow and bigger cars on the streets.Zakopane is the one place in Poland with higher mountains and quite big slopes for skiing but other than people who know how to ski, it does tend to attract a cert...Read More

Food in Poland's popular tourist destinations outside of the cities is rather poor. The restauranteurs push to maximise profits in what is a short season. Despite the fact that Zakopane has tourists all year round, the situation is not much better. Having spent over 6 hours in the car, I was rather peckish and spotted a Chinese restaurant just off the main drag. Four of us went there on Valentine's Day, we were happy to get a seat as we hadn't made a reservation. The downstairs was closed, so other than the oriental music and the smell of food luring us upstairs, it was not particularly inviting but we pushed on up there anyway. We attempted to sit down at a table for four but the room was ...Read More

After a leisurely hike to Morskie Oko proved a touch more tiring than the walk in the park we'd expected and the only sustenance to have graced our gullets was a mandarin at the panoramic top, we had become famished. One place stood out over the others on the restaurant-lined street Krupowki and it happened to be one of the least aesthetic, with brash pictures of burgers, kebabs and other greasy fast foods - goral burger or 'mountain' burger promotes what's essentially junk food passed off as local hearty fare.Again, like our other culinary experiences in Zakopane, the dining area was cramped but at least we knew that we'd be served quickly. One section specialised in potato ca...Read More

It had been about 6 years since my previous visit to Zakopane prior to my most recent one. One of my wife's favourite haunts is a pub located towards the bottom of Krupowki, opposite a classy looking restaurant . There are a row of wooden houses and the pub is above a cafe. The icy steps down could prove a death trap taking into account the tipsiness of the average customer. I was feeling tired but taking into account it was Valentine's, I thought it was better I agreed to go. There was some live music, an electric guitarist complimenting a singer with an acoustic guitar. The guitarist was good and the singer certainly played long sets and put a lot of effort in. It had to be said that he ...Read More

My wife and I tend to take it in turns to pick accommodations and neither of us are usually happy with our choices. As a teenager, she had spent quite a lot of time in Zakopane, so it was therefore very much her territory, so I let her have the last say despite it having been my town. The last section of road to Zakopane is littered with places to stay and old men sit in the snow with signs signalling they have rooms to rent. Getting out of Zakopane to its more distant suburbs can be a bit of a pain though if you want to go out at night. My wife found rooms to rent in a house just a few minutes walk through a park to the centre and we quickly reserved it, putting down one night's caution....Read More
