After a frantic hour or so looking round the Dinosaur Trail (see separate review) we headed back into the zoo to check out the remaining section. I’d seen a large sign indicating that a pair of Amur Leopards, which are on the brink of extinction had recently been acquired as a breeding pair. The animal is only to be found in the far east of Russia and it’s believed that there are only 35 remaining in the wild. The Panthera Pardus Orientalis can weigh around 45 kilograms and because it needs to adapt to the harsh existence in the icy climates of Russia it can grow a winter coat of up to 7 centimetres. We gave the huge enclosure a thorough inspection but this pair kept well hidden. A bit di...Read More

We were the first ones into the Zoo on this bright but bitterly cold day in early April and soon our grandson was sprinting off towards the whooping screams of some of the primates. We managed to slow him down in an attempt to get some kind of order into our visit. We’d been give a map of the grounds and it made sense to divide our trip into three stages covering the bigger part of the zoo before lunch and then the Dinosaur Trail (see separate review) and finally the remainder of the Zoo (see separate review). So we started off by checking out the monkeys and gibbons and not surprisingly there were performing characters in each of the cages. The monkeys seemed to spot us as we approached an...Read More

We had our 4 year old grandson staying with us for a few days and he’s mad keen on animals and Dinosaurs. Tycross Zoo fitted the bill well as they had a new dinosaur trail and the zoo, from what I remember from taken my son there many, many years ago, is nice and compact. The 50 acres of the Zoo are at Atherstone in Warwickshire and once within 5 miles of this attraction there is good road signage. The zoo was opened back in the early 60’s Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans and in 1972 became a charitable trust and although still known as Twycross Zoo it’s actually the East Midland Zoological Society. Over the years it’s grown considerably and it now cares for 1000 animals from 250 species, ma...Read More

There are four places to eat whilst at Tycross, the small Dome cafe, Gorilla Outpost, Dino cafe and Himalaya. We decided to go to Himalaya, which we’d seen on route to the Pay booths. To get there we had to ask at one of the pay booths for a bracelet which then allowed us unlimited access back to the park for the rest of the day. It’s very much a cafeteria type environment with tables that it makes sense to get a stake on before you buy your food. There’s nothing worse than having a hot plated meal and then not being able to find a table to sit at. There are a series of bays selling different types of food ranging from the classic fast food burger and chips to the standard pub grub meals of...Read More

After lunch we, and a very excited 4 year-old headed out to see the Dinosaurs. The Dinosaur Trail had only opened this week and we were expecting it to be extremely crowded, but there was plenty of space around and despite the fact that there were many visitors we pleasantly surprised at how quiet it seemed. At the sight of the first dinosaur guarding the entrance to the trail our grandson went almost ballistic. The Edmontonia, he assured us was a vegetarian and so we were "safe" and despite the fact that it was built like a tank with tough "plates" on its back and spikes on its shoulders this tough appearance was all about defence. This 7 metre long dinosaur was not built for speed so if t...Read More
