Martin Mere is a wild fowl and wetland centre in the Lancashire countryside. We spent 3 hours there on a Saturday afternoon. It is a good place to bring children, they can explore, see the wild-life and learn about them. It is open every day between 9 and 5. The cost though is a bit expensive, in my opinion. We paid £11.95 each and £5.10 for our son. The car park was extremely busy when we arrived, and I thought we were going to have to endure big crowds. This, however, is such a large site that once we got inside, it did not feel at all crowded. There are apparently specific times of the year when a visit here can be really spectacular. In winter, wild ducks, geese and swans are...Read More

We spent a very interesting Saturday afternoon at this museum. Its location is really convenient - right on the Albert Docks in Liverpool. It is open every day between 10am and 5pm and entrance, like to most museums in the city, is free. There are 4 floors, we decided to start at the top and work our way down through the museum. The third floor was where we started. This level is the Slavery Museum. The whole area has exhibits themed around slavery and the part Liverpool played as a major port in this. I had been to this exhibition years ago, it has changed quite a lot since then. On my first visit, I was blown away. The exhibition was outstanding with many hands-on things. They ha...Read More

We visited the Discovery Centre at Jodrell Bank on a sunny, Saturday afternoon. It is an educational and informative place to visit. We were a party of 7 - 4 adults and 3 children aged 9 and 10. Everybody enjoyed it and came away having learned something new.Jodrell Bank is linked to the University of Manchester and is an observatory which is well known for its research in astronomy. We visited Freshfields Donkey Village on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Try and make sure you come here during reasonable weather - it would be a bit bleak in the wind and rain, but on a nice, bright day it is a beautiful place. This is a donkey sanctuary, run as a charity where they rescue maltreated, abused or neglected donkeys, bring them here and keep them for the rest of the donkey's life. It is open every day except Monday and Tuesday, when they bring special needs children to interact with the donkeys. Opening times are 11am to 4.30pm, but during the winter, they only open at weekends. We found the place very easily, it is near a village called Peak Forest and when you get t...Read More

Peak Forest Walk

Story/Tip

Peak Forest Walk Photo, Manchester, England
Quote:
We had visited the Freshfields Donkey Sanctuary just outside the village of Peak Forest in Derbyshire, spent about 45 minutes there, then decided to do a walk around the village itself and explore a bit of the countryside. The walk we did was a mixture of different walks I had in various books, tailored to suit our needs. It took about 2.5 hours and was 4.5 miles long.We drove into the village of Peak Forest, past the village church and parked at the Methodist Church. The village is tiny, you couldn't get lost, and this seemed like the best place to leave our car for the afternoon. Take a look at the main, old church though as you go past. It has some interesting history. Until 1804...Read More
