We had chosen our six "free excursions" at Lamanai and the first one was The Spotlight Safari. We had to assemble at 7.30 at the landing pier and as dutiful tourists all 8 of us were there on time. Our guide fired up the motor on the boat and we all clambered in. The full moon was already illuminating the water and the two powerful spotlights, which were controlled by the driver would shine on any wildlife daring to be in the vicinity. We’d been told to take warm clothing as it can "get mighty chilly on the water", and our cameras. The notion of "mighty chilly" didn’t even cross my radar – it was just a pleasant evening with a gentle breeze, but I guess for the locals it would be cold. Certainly I had...Read More

Tree Frogs and Hairy Tarantulas

Our friends had taken the night-time trail the previous day so we were looking forward to a similar experience. The highlight for them had been a Toucan that they’d spotted in a distant tree. It was too far to appreciate with the naked eye, but as clear as a bell through the lens of the guide’s high powered telescope. We set off, with two others, to the strain of "whatever you see, please don’t see the Tree Frog". Apparently their guide had said that the tree frog was around but it was very hard to spot.Up until that point I’d not even considered that we see such a creature, but it had become iconic of the jungle following its starring role on the cover of David Attenborough’s "Life on Ear...Read More

Sunset Cocktail Cruise

One of the outings offered by Lamanai Lodge was the "Sunset Cocktail" and surprisingly it involved Sunset, Cocktail and water. We assembled at 4.00 pm at the lodge’s pier and soon the four of us were clambering onto the pontoon. It hadn’t taken long for us to realise that we were on our own as there were only 4 seats on the vessel and we were happy that was the case as the previous night there had been 12 and I suspect that they would have been very restricted in movement and the photo opportunities would have been limited. Soon we were being un-tethered from the security of the pier and our guide for the evening jumped aboard to navigate us through the lagoon. His first priority was to gi...Read More

Lamanai Lodge was our penultimate stay on our Guatamalan-Belize adventure and we were collected at the airport and transferred, by road, to the river pier and then by boat to the lodge. The road transfer took about 45 minutes and then there was another hour on the boat. The first part of this journey wasn’t particularly eventful as the landscape was generally flat and unspectacular, but the river journey was real good fun, with loads of birdlife grabbing our attention. At the pier they were already waiting for us and our luggage mystically was removed from the boat and spirited into our rooms. As with our other stays, check in was pretty quick and no nonsense. Soon we were being led to our ...Read More

The jungle dawn walk was the last of our six excursions, but sadly one that I missed out on due to a rather unpleasant stomach bug. My wife went on her own and the following are her words and her first venture in to ghost-writng!The alarm went off at 5-30am – it was pitch black and not a time I would normally be up and about; however by 6am, when we all (3 of us) met in the lobby it was light and a very pleasant temperature. Coffee and muffins were served before Levi, our guide for the morning, welcomed us.Before leaving the lodge behind we were delighted to see a hummingbird sat calmly in a tree, great photo opportunity but I had my husband’s camera and either because I am n...Read More
