On our first full day in Manali we took a trip to the Rohtang Pass. Since nearly every car in India is a little white Indica, we long ago learned to check each vehicle we used for distinguishing features so we’d be able to find it (and its driver). Our driver for the trip to Rohtang had a sticker across his windscreen that said ‘HADIMBA’ and we didn’t give too much thought to what it meant until we went sightseeing with our normal driver the next day. "First stop Hadimba Temple, sir" said Mr Singh and we smiled and said "Sure, whatever you like" and sat back to enjoy the ride.Whilst most of the visitors who go to Manali are looking for a chance to see the mountains, to experience snow, go ...Read More

When we'd arrived at the Hadimba Temple car park, we'd agreed with our driver to be back at the car in about an hour. It was quickly clear that neither he nor we had really appreciated that it wouldn't need so long. We strolled through the deodar woods around the temple and came back to the main road, about 100m away from the car park and we found the Museum of Himachal Pradesh Culture and Folk Art. It was a small, modern building which formed part of a shopping complex which appeared to be mostly closed. We didn't expect too much but we had time to kill and were happy to spend it mooching about regardless of what dusty relics we might find inside. The young woman working at the museum seem...Read More

Every trip to India should include a few seriously poor tourist attractions and our day in Manali offered one of the lamest so-called attractions that we’ve yet experienced. We take a certain delight in going to really crap attractions and no visit is ever really wasted. So long as it doesn’t take too much effort to get there, we’ll go where we’re told to just to see what’s there.I didn’t know that this place was on our itinerary but when our driver, Mr Singh, picked us up after we’d visited the Hadimba Temple and the nearby museum of Himachal art and culture, we just settled back in the car and let him take us wherever he wanted. He leaned back to look at us, said "Sir, Madam, Club ...Read More

Some holiday days are just packed full of things about which to write reviews and our day in the Himachal Pradesh town of Manali was such a day. Before noon we’d visited a major Hindu temple, strolled round a museum of local culture and visited the lamest so-called amusement park we’d ever seen. And there were still a couple more places to see before dinner.Hopping back into our car, we asked our driver, Mr Singh, where we were going next. Actually since Mr Singh spoke only slightly more English than I speak Hindi (and that’s about two dozen unconnected words) the conversation was rather more a case of us getting into the car, giving Mr Singh a meaningful and expectantly excited ‘where nex...Read More

Sometimes when you’re on holiday and visiting lots of different attractions, what you really want and need is a quiet, peaceful place to sit and think and preferably not get pestered by lots of people. If you find yourself in Manali and are searching for tranquillity, you could do a lot worse than track down the Van Vihar National Park. If you are expecting a lot of excitement and things to do, then the place may well disappoint, but if you’re just looking to shift down a gear or two and take things easy, it’s worth a visit. We had just been to a Buddhist temple nearby and wanted to see the park before looking for somewhere to go for dinner. Our driver had pointed out the park but not told ...Read More
