It was my birthday. I am usually curmudgonly on my birthday as age and thoughts of impending death tend to swamp me and puncture my usually bright demeanour. Therefore, restaurant choices need to be carefully thought out. For example, anything vegetarian or overly focused on healthy-eating is not usually tolerated. When I lived in China, my friends and I usually celebrated by visiting an all you can eat Japanese buffet, which had the added benefit of free drinks. This always went down well. For my 33rd birthday, my girlfriend booked us a table at La Horloge. It was a restaurant about which I knew little, so I suspended judgement. However, my girlfriend knew very well that it would take something speci...Read More

Exploring the Market

Story/Tip

Quote:
Last summer I read Christian Lander's fantastic book, 'Stuff White People Like'. It was an hilarious take on middle-class white society. Many of the small entries Lander included resonated with me to an unbelievable degree. The love of coffee, wearing a hoody with shorts and over-use of scarves were all things that seemed to be just totally me. There were a few sections, though, that I felt were a little alien to me. These included the love of farmer's markets and organic food. Neither of these were particularly big areas for me. However, one Saturday morning in Nice, this changed.I will begin by admitting that one of the reasons I never attended the market on Nice's Cours Saleya in the Old Town...Read More

Restaurant | "Still Over-Hyped"

It was well over [year] a since my previous visit to the restaurant La Favola in Nice's Old Town area. That visit had not been successful. If I remember correctly, I had ravioli in a walnut sauce that was bland to the point of monotony and my girlfriend had a pasta dish that was served in a rather dramatic iron bowl, but which was equally lacking in flair and imagination. However, since that visit, I had hear nothing but gushing praise for the place. In fact, I had even heard a client refer to it as "easily the best restaurant in Nice".Consequently, I figured we must have gone when the chef had an off-night and missed out on the true wonder of the place. So, I pledged to myself that we would vis...Read More

Restaurant | "Not sure if the food was a joke."

As I sit here writing, I find myself chuckling and appreciating the rather comic aspect of the dinner my girlfriend and I experienced at Gaglio on Valentine's Day. There were so many elements of it that were unbelievably bad that I feel there is nothing else for it but to smile wryly and chuckle. However, as I parted with over 100Euros for dinner and my girlfriend and I had our evening ruined by the hapless attempts at fusion cuisine, I am also just a little bit angry. As it was Valentine's Day and we were in search of something special, we booked Gaglio in advance. It was not possible to order a la carte. We were therefore limited to the Valentine's Day menu, which was 35 Euros per person. We pr...Read More

Restaurant | "Great food and great value"

Dining in Nice can be a truly wonderful experience. There area certain restaurants that are just out of this world. Le Hussard close to the Opera House provides French cuisine fused with some Asian dishes and is magnificent. Di Ya, which is in the Old Town, offers some outstanding Lebanese food. Choucas, which is in lost down a back alley in the Old Town, does some very good fondu. The list could go on and on as there are several great places to eat. However, as Nice is a major tourist destination, it is also possible to get royally screwed and end up paying over the odds for a very average meal. La Voille and Favola on Cours Saleya are both excellent examples of places where I have parted with signif...Read More
