We had planned to visit Oak Park while we were in Chicago but as we had given in the rental car and we were not sure how easy it would be to get from the train station to the house plus we found so many other things to see and do in Chicago so we decided not to bother. We then thought it would be a perfect place to visit on our way back from the hotel we were staying in at Elkhart Indiana as we had to be at the airport by 5 pm. This would be a perfect place to visit as it was pretty close to the airport as we wanted to be close before stopping to do things just in case there was a car problem or similar.I’ll be honest and confess to knowing very little about Frank Lloyd Wright...Read More

The Golden Hen Cafe,GalenaIllinoisGalena is a town with an interesting history. It began as a lead mining town which was situated on a river that was a branch of the Mississippi River which years ago was navigable. As well as this Galenas’ other claim to fame is that it was the home of no less than nine of the North’s Civil War generals including Ulysses S. Grant. We spent a day exploring this town on our great river Road trip and while we were there we had our lunch in this little cafe. There was not a huge choice of eating places if you only wanted a sandwich or snack, most places seemed to be serving full meals which we didn’t want. Thankfully in keeping with the...Read More

Galena is a former lead mining town in Illinois that has re-invented itself as a historical Town when in the 1960s some residents had the fore thought to preserve the old 1800s buildings rather than knocking them down. Galena also boasts that no less than nine Union Army generals hailed from the city and the most famous of these was Ulysses S. Grant who became the country’s 18th President. The entire central town is now on the Register of Historical Places and has been since 1969. We spent some time exploring the city/town on foot but decided that the trolley tour looked fun and might take us further than we felt like walking so we went and booked ourselves on to the 1.30 pm tour. The buse...Read More

We decided to drive the section of this famous road from Chicago to Springfield and then back again a few days later. This meant that the excitements we missed on the way to Springfield we tried to call in and see on the way back up towards Chicago. I will review these in geographical order from Chicago to Springfield as it will be more logical.CHICAGOThis is the start of this famous road and it is said to begin at BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN. This rather beautiful fountain is in Grant Park in 1927 and is said to be modelled on a Versailles Palace fountain. According to information received in Chicago this is one of the largest fountains in the world. This fountain was built just one year af...Read More

Route 66 Chicago to Springfield

Story/Tip

FUNKS GROVEFunks Grove Pure Maple Sirup. We tried to find this for about half an hour and gave up so i have no idea what is there but if you do want to visit then be prepared to hunt as neither our satnav nor the instructions on our Route 66 guide took us there. The Funk's Grove Maple Sirup business was established in 1891. Sirup is correctly spelled this way to distinguish it from sugar-based syrup. This was and continues to be a major stopping point along Route 66. Anyway we failed to get to this magical place!Funks Grove I-55 Rest Area; this we did manage to find and it was worth the stop because apart from the water fountains, drinks machines and toilets, which we made good use o...Read More
