West Egg620 North Fairbanks Court Chicago, Illinois 60611NO BREAKFASTS IN THE HOTEL - HELP!!We spent a week in Chicago in June 2012 and our hotel we stayed in didn’t include breakfast in its tariff. This meant that we had to find our breakfast each day. We ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel one day and then we found this place and had a couple of breakfasts in here. I could easily pass on breakfast as it is a meal I have little interest in but my son and his girlfriend felt that breakfast was a big part of their holiday experience. My husband also enjoys his holiday breakfasts and so I went along too.We asked some local people passing by where t...Read More

Pizzeria Uno29 East Ohio Chicago, IL 60611 After a day at the Blues Festival we decided it would be a good opportunity to test out the reputedly first restaurant to serve the famous ‘Chicago Deep Pan pizzas’.HISTORYThe Pizzeria Uno’s history goes way back to Chicago in 1943 when the owner Ike Sewell developed deep dish pizza and opened a new type of restaurant at the corner of Ohio & Wabash. This is the one we visited and it is tiny and you have to queue to get in!This new pizza with the thick crust caused a sensation The crust is described as ‘buttery 'out-of-this-world' crust that had a tall edge like a fruit pie.’ The recipe he inven...Read More

This hotel we booked as we wanted somewhere pretty close to Chicago but on our way towards the Great River road journey we had planned. We knew we would be landing in Chicago after a reasonably long flight and so a very long day so we needed to have somewhere not too long a drive away.We are members of Marriott rewards and had enough points for a free night so this hotel fulfilled all our needs on this first night in the USA this holiday. I booked this before we left the UK so we knew we had a decent place to stop and recover before starting our driving trip.We found the place very easily and it was only about an hour from O Hare Airport which was lucky as we had had a longer f...Read More

Restaurant | "An English pub in Chicago"

Quote:
Elephant and Castle – N. Wabash Ave ChicagoThis ‘English’ pub was attached to our hotel in Chicago and so we did visit it a few times during our stay. We had breakfast there on the day England V France Euro game, we had an evening meal on another night as they offered a quiz (we came second!) and we also enjoyed a drink in there during the Ireland V Spain game and again for the England V Sweden game so we had a pretty good testing of the place. This is actually a chain of bars/restaurants in North America and one of two in Chicago so this is not unique but they do offer a nice enough atmosphere and a pretence of being in an English pub albeit that this one had an Irish manager....Read More

Dos Diablos, 15 West Hubbard Street, Chicago, IL 60654This restaurant was one of a few we ate in while in Chicago. This one was a treat from my son and his girlfriend and they selected it knowing we all loved Mexican food so it would appeal to us all and it was different from the other places we had eaten at during our stay.We walked to the restaurant and it was about 15 minutes from or hotel and quite a pleasant walk along the ‘Magnificent Mile’ mainly. On arrival we were greeted and welcomed and offered a table inside but we asked to sit outside as it was a great view of Trump Towers and inside was actually quite dimly lit. Had it been winter we would have chosen the darkly l...Read More

Hotel | "The Not so great"

NOT SO GREATThe bathroom was tiny and certainly room for only one person in there at a time. You had to shut the door to put the bathmat spread on the floor otherwise there was not enough room. They did leave us plenty of nice white fairly fluffy towels and they changed them daily even though we did hang them up.There were lots of negatives though and the second was that the rate we paid did not include breakfast and if we had the hotel breakfast it was $17.95 +tax. If you ordered a la carte then a pot of yoghurt was $4, juice the same and cereals were $5. Talk about rip off prices, needless to say we didn’t eat there at all.The next major rip off was that the mini bar we...Read More

Quote:
Avenue Hotel, East Huron Ave, ChicagoI booked a week at this hotel a long time before our trip. I think this was the second thing we booked after Izatys and our flights. We had to be in Chicago for the week end of the 9th June as that was when the Blues festival was and my husband had that festival on his Bucket List of things he wanted to do.The hotel is part of the Crowne Plaza Group and is very centrally situated a few blocks back from Navy Pier and a pretty easy walk to the river and across to Grant Park where the festival was being held. My son and his girlfriend were joining us so I thought I had booked a suite and would be getting something similar to the place we had at Polo ...Read More

Lou Mitchell’s, 565 W. Jackson Boulevard, ChicagoJackson Boulevard was the starting point for the original Route 66. Today you can drive into Chicago on the "Mother Road" from the Kennedy Expressway, Illinois Interstate 90/94 take the exit Jackson east and then you will see Lou Mitchell’s on your right. The restaurant is almost at the intersection of Jackson and Jefferson. The famous road we know as Route 66 was created in 1926 but the restaurant is a bit older as it was opened in 1923. We had a brunch here and chose this for the fact that it is the original start of Route 66, the Mother Road of the USA. This road passes through eight states and has been the subject of songs an...Read More

Shoreline Architecture River cruise – ChicagoWe spent a week in Chicago in June 2012 and knew we wanted to take a boat trip. We had thought about a trip on Lake Michigan but we did a bit of research and found that in fact you see a lot more from the boat on the River trip hence we booked this. We did also do the Lake shore trip as we got a discount for doing the two.PRICES AND WHERE TO GET ONThe boat leaves from the Ogden Slip, which is located on the west side of Gateway Park at the entrance of Navy Pier. There is a booth there to purchase tickets but you can also buy them at other booth and on line which is slightly cheaper. The prices may be slightly differe...Read More
