This is part 2 of my review on this National trust property - the first part dealt with the building and this part other aspects of the place.FOOD AND TOILETSThere is a pretty basic tea room in one of the rooms which offers coffee and teas as well as cold drinks and a few cakes and cold snacks but it isn’t cheap but we do find that NT places can be pricey on food sometimes. There are toilets on the ground floor but they are not really fully disabled toilets so someone with a wheel chair might have a problem. THE GROUNDSThere are beautiful grounds around the castle and these are free for anyone to enjoy. Unlike most NT properties there is no person at the ...Read More

Late last year we had a week in the Lake District and explore a number of National trust properties to make use of our NT membership. One of the places we visited we had not heard of before we saw it in the NT brochure of the Lake District was Castle Wray. It also happened to be fairly close to where we were staying too so after passing it a few times we e felt obliged to call in and see what was there.PRICES AND TIMESThe grounds are open from dawn to dusk, whilst the castle itself is open from 10:30am until 5pm, (times may vary). Entry to the grounds is free Prices for castle entry £6.00 adult (£6.60 gift aid) £3.00 children (£3.30 gift aid) £15....Read More

I wanted to see some of the places connected to Beatrix Potter. I have loved her books since I was a child and still have my childhood copies. I also wanted to see places connected to Wordsworth and so this was our itinerary basis for this visit. The former farm house was bought by Beatrix Potter as an adult and thus is where she created most if her beautifully illustrated books. When visiting this property y...Read More

Beatrix Potter GalleryHawkshead VillageA22 0NSLake DistrictThis little gallery like Hill Top farm, Beatrix Potter’s home was left to the national trust by the lady herself. Beatrix Potter was not only very fond of the Lake District but was also very enthusiastic about nature and conservation and because she felt the NT would look after the properties and benefit from them as well she left both of these properties to the NT.This gallery was the law office of Beatrix potter’s husband and this is the place where they met and fell in love. It is a small very cosy building and when visiting you can view many of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings. The displays chang...Read More

Steam Yacht GondolaOnce I saw this advertised in the national Trust book and leaflet about things to do in the Lake District this went to the top of the list for me. What a very strange vessel and something unique so i had to have a ride in it.WHERE IS IT AND HOW MUCHThe steam yacht gondola sails on Lake Coniston and the trips depart from Coniston pier and then depending on the length of your cruise they can call at Brantwood and Monk Coniston.Although this is owned by the National Trust it is chargable even for NT members because of the running costs in the trips. This was not a cheap trip at £19 per adult but well worth it in my view as there is n...Read More
