Café De Kroonluchter is located at one of the most oldest buildings in the city of Groningen. It’s within walking distance of the Noorderplantsoen and within 10 minutes walking of the city centre of Groningen. It’s easily reached by public transport with the Station North only at 5 minutes away. Right in front of the bar is the bus stop which will take you to the city centre and to the main train station.

The bar is mostly used for private parties as birthdays, business parties but is also open for just people passing by. It’s located right on the corner with a small terrace in the front. It has a large window which provides guests with a great view over the streets. The bar offers space for around 50 people and has a large bar.

The selection of drinks and alcohol is normal and they mostly specialise in beer. They offer beer including Erdinger, Hertog Jan and Hoegaarden but you can also just enjoy several kinds of coffee including French, Spanish and Italian coffee. The bar doesn’t serve dinner but they offers a extensive selection of snacks including olives, cheese, sausages, scrimps, salmon and more. I have to say it’s always fun to come here and normally we do get some snacks simply because you do get hungry at the end of the night. The snacks aren’t expensive and you can get a nice selection of snacks for the price of 3,50 euros.

I would also say that the drinks aren’t that expensive but I think they are reasonable priced compared to any other bar in Groningen. For a half a litre of Erdinger you pay 4,50 euros and for a normal beer you pay 1,50 euros. The selection of beer is good and I always love to try something new. On average every few months they have a new beer which keeps it interesting to come back!

The staff is always very friendly and there is normally only one staff member behind the bar. On busy nights like Saturday you will find two people helping and cleaning. The bar is clean and maybe only the toilets get a bit dirty at the end of the night especially when there’s only one staff member present. Not really a big problem and when it gets too worse it always gets cleaned.
The bar is handicap accessible but it’s not really a large bar so it might become a bit crowded. Non the less it’s accessible with a wheel chair.

The bar has a great atmosphere and I really enjoy going here. I normally go here once a month with a few friends. It has the perfect atmosphere were you can have a normal chat without loud music. The staff is friendly and they have a good selection of beer. A great bar and four stars!

De Twee Heren is a small bar but often very popular under the locals. Especially with special events like the Word Cup football many go here to support the Dutch football team and of course with the Dutch National Queens day (In celebration of the Dutch Queen) many people go here traditionally dressed in orange. It’s a small bar but with a terrace if offers just that little bit of more space to ensure it’s large enough for 80 people.

The bar is a traditional Dutch bar which are many to be found in the city of Groningen. It’s decorating is mostly brown dark wood and when you enter you can find the typical dark wood bar to your right. You can also find a friendly staff member here to help you with making a choice of what to drink. They offer a good selection of beer and several other alcoholic beverages. The selection is not really extensive but good enough for most people. They don’t serve any cocktails for example.

Food wise the bar only serves snacks like sandwiches, chips and hamburgers. Not a great selection but since it’s a bar it’s more than enough. You can also just enjoy a cup of coffee or tea if you want. During the football matches you have a large television up on the wall and several evenings they organise darts games and competitions for people to enjoy.

There are toilets available at the back of the bar and in the beginning of the evening they will be clean but normally at the end of the night they become much less. There isn’t normally that much staff present so I don’t think they really have the capacity to keep it clean. It’s not bad but it’s really depending on the visitors themselves how clean the toilets stay.
It think this bar is your typical Dutch bar with lots of wood and of course a good selection of beer. It’s a bar with a great atmosphere and were many people come to meet friends, play some darts and normally before they go out. It has a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. For me this bar is getting three stars because it’s not the largest bar and the toilets could have been cleaner at most nights. Read Less

While normally the most bars and restaurants are located in the city centre of Groningen, this restaurant is located within ten minutes walking. It’s easy to find since you only have to follow one road and just outside the restaurant stops several busses. The park of the Noorderplantsoen is right in front of the restaurant providing it with a great view.

The restaurant is a typical bar/restaurant in The Netherlands and you can find them every were. They have normally a mostly living room atmosphere with lots of wood coloured furniture and it feels warm and cosy. This restaurant is no exception and when you enter you see on your left the bar with a large extensive selection of drinks. On the right and in the back of the restaurant you see the wooden tables with the wooden chairs. It all looks very cosy.

When the weather allows it you can sit outside. Normally they have around six table ready and when the sun is shining they are quickly filled so you better come on time. The tables inside and outside have all candles and are beautifully decorated. Inside the interior is mostly wood with some paintings and cosy lighting. It’s nothing special but it created the perfect atmosphere that makes you feel welcome.

Food wise it’s a very typical Dutch restaurant with mostly international dishes like steak, beef and some fish dishes. Vegetarians will find a selection of dishes specially made for them. The menu is quiet extensive with appetizers, main courses and desserts. Everything sounded very delicious and reasonable priced. I would say they are normal prices compared to the other restaurants in Groningen.

I ordered entrecote with some wedges and vegetables. It’s always a question of how much you get and while some restaurants don’t give you much of meat, this restaurant is certainly not shy in giving you much. I had a nice full plate with a good portion of meat, wedges and vegetables and it tasted delicious! The price was reasonable and I think for 14 euros I got worth my money.

The toilets are in the back and were clean and well maintained. I think the whole restaurant looked clean and the staff were nicely dressed. They were friendly and quick enough with serving the food and the drinks. We got our menu’s after two minutes so that’s certainly quick enough!

I would definitely go back to this restaurant for the good food, nice atmosphere and the friendly staff. The prices are reasonable for what you get. The location could have been better but sitting outside you have a great view of the park. In winter you can sit comfortable inside with a great atmosphere. For me it’s getting four stars.

Every year in the city of Groningen is the Noorderzon Festival at the Noorderplantsoen Park. The festival takes place in the month of August and is on for one and a half week. It’s one of the most popular festivals in the North of the Netherland and every year it attracts thousands of visitors. It’s mostly a free festival where you can enjoy free music and just get a drink and some food. It’s very popular with the locals and every year a big hit.

The Noorderplantsoen is a large park in the north of the city and is within 10 minutes walking from the city centre. The park is quite large but it’s not the largest park in the city but it’s long and that makes it perfect for the festival. It’s not your typical festival with music because it’s more focused on theatre and performances. During the week and a half there are almost a hundred different kind of performances and some of them are free.

If you don’t want to see a performance you can still wonder around because there is plenty to do. There are several restaurants were you can eat but also many bars were you can buy a beer, cocktail or just a soft drinks. You don’t have to be afraid that you will starve because there are plenty of food stalls that sell all kind of different food. Here and there is some live music and you can just sit or stand on the grass and enjoy.

Every year the Noorderzon festival ends with fireworks. Funny enough the fireworks don’t take place at the park because of safety regulations. It’s not far and only ten minutes away from the park you can enjoy half an hour fireworks.

The Noorderzon festival is very popular with the locals and almost every citizen of Groningen goes at least once. The festival is on during the whole day and during the day it’s more focused on children. At night the adults come after work and enjoy a performance or just grab some food and a drink. Because the festival is outside it really depends on the weather to be a success. Since it’s in the Netherlands you are never guaranteed but rain or sunshine the locals always put on a smile.

The Noorderzon festival gets five stars from me for its diversity and since the access to it is free. You decide want you want to see and what you want to do and it’s perfect for just to wander about. We went here a few nights but since the weather wasn’t really that great we didn’t always stay that long. One night we just sat down on the grass with a group of six next to the lake and enjoyed the music on the background while many people passed us by. A really great and fun experience. Read Less
