I’m having a heck of a week and it’s only Tuesday. On Monday afternoon I flew to Paris, today (Tuesday) I’m back in the North West of England, and tomorrow I’m off to Crema in Italy. Then I’ll squeeze in Bremen in Germany before finally flying home on Friday. It’s one of those stupid weeks – the second so far this year – when some bright spark decides we’ll attempt to squeeze lots of meetings all into one week. Four countries, eight flights, and only two opportunities to eat a proper dinner. Dinner in the airport hotel in Paris was nothing too scary but today was the first and only time that the six of us who are on the ‘tour’ would all get a chance to eat together. The rest of the week we’ll be on ai...Read More

When faced with the prospect of an early morning flight, my spirits take a very quick and very deep dive. I am not a morning person at all and I try very hard to avoid really early flights. In order to get to Lisbon for a meeting, I had a number of choices, the ‘least worst’ of which was a 7.40 am EasyJet flight out of Luton airport. I could have got up super early to drive down to Luton but to do that I calculated I’d need to set the alarm clock for around 3.30 am. That’s a time that barely makes it worth going to bed. I went for the wise choice and booked a night in a hotel at the airport. One of the good things about Luton Airport – and goodness knows there’s not a long list of th...Read More

One disturbing characteristic of ‘budget’ airlines is their dedication to stripping service to the bone and then charging the customer for every little thing on top. We’ve still not quite reached the often threatened idea of a money slot on the toilet door but I wouldn’t rule out anything. One day they’ll find out how to make us stand and strap-hang but it’s not happened yet, thankfully. Sadly, this type of penny-pinching and determination not to miss an opportunity to part us from our money seems to be spreading to many of our airports. Most recently I was disappointed by the money-grabbing behaviour of Luton Airport.Luton has long been a favourite with the budget airlines and was o...Read More

I spend a lot of time in airports – far too much to be good for me, I’m sure. As a result of this I tend to have favourite car parks to which I can become very loyal. My previous favourite Heathrow car park has changed hands and I’m not sure who owns it any more, but my latest and greatest find has been Purple Parking Business car park on Bath Rd. I first found this place when I booked 16 nights parking for our holiday in India for just £78 which was an excellent bargain. I had to overcome my reluctance to book with Purple Parking since I’d once had a very nasty incident at their long stay car park where my car had its wiring eaten by rats. Apparently the great German automotive giants make their elec...Read More

Last week I went to Lisbon and took a morning flight at 8.15 am. Since I live a good hour and a half from Heathrow even when the M1 and M25 are behaving themselves, I wasn’t willing to risk driving down on the morning of the flight especially at this time of year when the weather can spring some nasty surprises. I booked the rather long-windedly named ‘Doubletree by Hilton Heathrow Airport’ for the very reasonable price of £54 for the night, room only. My husband came over all solicitous when he realised that I’d be driving down quite late. "Make sure you know where the hotel is before you leave the car at the car park" he instructed. Being a good obedient wife, I googled both the hotel an...Read More
