I suspect I might have been Portuguese in a previous life. I like the simple things in life – sunshine, fresh air and fish. Yep, fish. There’s little the average Portuguese loves more than fish, except of course MORE fish. Since I am a fishitarian, a visit to Lisbon always means I’m going to find lots of places to indulge my love of fish and seafood. Added to the sheer abundance of fishy restaurants I have a secret weapon in Isabel, my local colleague and fishy-foodie. Here’s a woman who voraciously reads every magazine in the city that highlights exciting new restaurants – and then happily uses my visits as an excuse to go and try them out. When I announced my most recent visit she forgot to book me ...Read More

One of the nicest things to happen to me in the last year was getting a team member based in Lisbon. Not only is Isabel an absolutely lovely person, but she gives me the perfect excuse to visit one of my favourite European cities on a fairly regular basis. Normally I stay at the VIP Executive Arts in the Expo district of the city but for my most recent visit the city hotels were booked up long in advance for a trade show and the Arts had inflated its normal price of around €65 to a massive €200. Since I don’t actually like the hotel all that much, I was more than happy when Isabel suggested I stay at the VIP Executive Santa Iria, about 10 km north of the city, just off the Estrada Nacional 10 in Santa...Read More

We kicked off with two long plates and a slate slab of sushi and sashimi. One plate was a sashimi salad with chopped lettuce and tomatoes and chunks of raw fish. The other plate held tataki (seared salmon) and swing maki (a sort of tempura sushi in a light batter). The slate held a mound of mixed sashimi (salmon, tuna and something white that could have been clam) and four different types of sushi including three types of sushi rolls and nigiris (fish on top of rice). Some of the rolls had seaweed on the outside and others had sesame seeds. To go with these there were slices of cucumber, a mount of finely sliced ginger and a blob of killer wasabe. We each had a little rectangular dish for our soy sauc...Read More

Portugal is having a horrible time these days; the economy is a mess, the taxes are flying up and people are really struggling. My sympathies for the people of this fabulous country run deep but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy to enjoy one of the few good side effects of the crisis and that’s fabulous value-for-money dining in Lisbon. Portugal has always been a place where your money goes further than most of the rest of Europe, but just recently it’s become spectacularly good value. A fabulous example of that can be found at the restaurant where I went for a pre-Christmas celebration with two of my colleagues from the Lisbon office. In Lisbon I know that I can generously offer to pick up the bill an...Read More

Visiting my colleagues in the Lisbon office is always a treat. Not only are they a super bunch of lovely people but they can be guaranteed to take me to some lovely restaurants. My last visit was a brief one – in on Thursday, out on Friday – but they still managed to take me to two superb restaurants. Lunch on Thursday was at one of their regular spots, a restaurant and cervejaria (beer place) called O Ze Carteiro. Our office is in the Santa Iria district in the north of Lisbon and this place was about 10 minutes drive from there.I believe there is more than one place going by this name since Tripadvisor lists the same restaurant name with a different address. The place I am reviewing is a...Read More
