Overview

Asahadake
Sitting in a Rotemburo (outdoor onsen) at 5am watching the sun rise and listening to the wildlife. The trail to Tenninkyo Onsen form Ashidake is questionably much further than stated,, It took me 3 hours to cover what was a 5.5km trail and i was walking a good pace..There are two routes the best one is to take the path opposite the Youth Hostel and then turn a sharp right into the campsite,, don't follow the path that climbs a steep path that is straight ahead. Once in Tenninkyo there was only one bus back a day to Asahidake which meant even going the same route back or walking along the road for about 15km

Quick Tips:

Remember to take camera manual with me next time!!!Beware there are bears in Ashadake area in the autumn. Also the path has several streams crossing it and som be careful crossing as they can get very full.

Best Way To Get Around:

From Asahikawa to Asahidake many guide books state that there is a free bus, this no longer appears to be the case and the journey costs at present 1000 yen. Get bus number 66 from Stop 4 outside the station.. To get back is free as long as you have a voucher from your accomodation to prove you stayed there.
A very clean place, excellent food...wonderful views over the mountains and a indoor and outdoor naturally heated Japanese bath. The staff were also helpful and provided valuable information for walks in the area.
