Trinidad - Island People

A travel journal to Trinidad by flippa

The most southern and less visited island in the Caribbean chain has so much to offer to its visitors!

A trip to the Devil's Woodyard, is not as frightening as you might think. It is a series of little mud volcanoes, where you can watch mud spitting out at you. Another unique wonder, not too far from the volcanoes, is the 'lake' which is filled with pitch, hence the name Pitch Lake. It is theraputic, although it is a bit smelly!

If hunger grabs you at Maracas beach, a shark and bake and alloo pie, the lot for just , will slip down nicely. Or a doubles early morning for breakfast with some coconut water from Tony's truck round the savannah can be just as nice. Not forgetting buljol (saltfish salad), pilourie balls and salt prunes!

Quick Tips:

Going out can be inexpensive, but it is best to go with a local, to reach Pier1 or Club Coconuts. The Base, which is a transformed base, is also worth a visit, even if it is only to see the decoration!!!

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around the island is to rent a car. Taking a maxi taxi (a sort of minibus) can be confusing if you don't know which colour-band taxi to get.

You've tried the best, now try the rest. The lively Trini carnival is fantastic. Peter Minshall's costumes are outstanding. Do you remember those huge figures that danced on the running track at the Olympic games in Atlanta? That was thanks to Peter. During Carnival time, there are many soca fetes to go to and 'wine', and even if you just go for the 'lime', you'll be wanting to get on that stage and beat some pan. If you go to the Renegades panyard, you will see the true meaning of pan, whilst sipping a Carib, the beer of the Caribbean!
