Every morning during our trip to Edinburgh, I tended to be up fairly early and would go out for a bit while my mum had a long lie. On my way back I'd pick up something nice for breakfast; very close to the flat we were renting was Bobby's Sandwich Bar, which had been recommended by the owner of the flat when he let us in, so one morning I decided to try it.As with many places in the area, Bobby's Sandwich Bar is named after Greyfriars Bobby, the wee Skye Terrier famous for watching over his masters grave in the nearby Greyfriars Kirkyard. The sandwich bar is painted bright orange outside, with a couple of tables on the pavement and a bench inside. There are chiller cabinets filled with san...Read More

Central Takeaway & Pizzeria

On our first afternoon of our recent trip to Edinburgh, my mum and I went for a brief stroll around the area our rented flat was in, and spotted the Central Takeaway & Pizzeria, on Teviot Place. Later, when considering what to do for tea, we decided not to go out but to get fish and chips instead - so off I went to the Central Takeaway. My mum had asked me to get her a fish supper, preferably a half size portion if possible, but I had a look at the menu when I got there, although it was unlikely I'd have anything other than fish and chips. As you can guess from the name, the Central Takeaway & Pizzeria offers a reasonable choice of pizzas alongside the more traditional chipper fare....Read More

On our arrival in Edinburgh at the start of our holiday, my mum and I had an hour or so to kill before we were due to meet the owner of the flat we were renting. Rather than head up into the town for such a short time, we decided to stay in Waverley Station and get some lunch. Faced with a choice of Burger King, Costa (which had its tables out in the station concourse) and the station pub, the Nor'Loch, we chose the pub.For a station eatery, the prices on the menu were surprisingly reasonable. There was a selection of sandwiches and toasties, some full size main meals, and some quick bites which included snack like options and also mini versions of main meals. My mum chose a tuna melt toas...Read More

Nando's

Restaurant | "Spiced"

Until my trip to Edinburgh in October this year, I had never been to a Nandos restaurant, despite the fact that the Portuguese chain seems to be everywhere these days. There was one right across the road from the flat my mum and I were staying in, on the corner of George IV Bridge and Chambers Street, and she seemed keen to try it - so on our final evening we decided to give it a go. Having spotted a sign outside advertising that they did takeaway, we phoned in our order and I went to collect it.Although we had made our choices from the online menu, phoning in the order was a bit more complicated than I expected. I had the same feeling that I had the very first time I went to a Subway stor...Read More

Bella Italia

Before my mum and I went to Edinburgh in October, we got a free trial from tastecard - this is a restaurant discount scheme which gives you 50% off your bill or 2 for 1 in lots of restaurants in the UK. We thought we might as well try to save some money while still enjoying some nice meals. We chose to visit Bella Italia specifically because it offered a 2 for 1 offer through tastecard. The Bella Italia restaurant that we visited was on Northbridge, in Edinburgh. It was a weeknight we visited, a Wednesday if I remember rightly, and the restaurant was very busy. We had attempted to book a table but there had been no answer when I called several times. We were told there would be a bit of a w...Read More
