Restaurant | "Great Food, Not too Much Ambience"

Quote:
As we pulled up in the car outside Formula 1, in almost every way I was feeling apprehensive about eating there. First of all, it was located in a retail park just outside Shumen. Not only was it tucked away in a retail park, which hardly suggests fine dining, but it also looked more like an outlet store than a restaurant. The building was large, the ceilings high and the front almost completely made of glass. It certainly did not suggest an intimate dining experience. Finally, the name Formula 1 is also used in Europe for a chain of budget hotels. So, I imagined I was going to be getting low quality fast-food. I could not have been more wrong.Actually, perhaps I could have been a little m...Read More

A Night on the Tiles in Varna

Story/Tip

There are so many angles from which I could write and article about a night out in Varna that for a good while I was stumped as to how I should approach it. However, after much consideration I figured that I should list all the things that came to mind and assault the reader with a barrage of information on entertainment in Bulgaria's third largest city. I thought I would start with the frivolities themselves because, more than anything, Varna proved to be a fantastic place to paint the town red. The major aspect of this is that it is far from terrible to sit in bars or dance in clubs that are situated right on the beach. We began our evening in a lounge bar where we had cocktails on a dec...Read More

Attraction | "Old, Dusty and Interesting ... ish"

Even though the capital of Bulgaria is now located in Sofia in the West of the country, much of the nation's history is situated in its Eastern reaches close to the cities of Shumen and Varna. The countries first two capital cities, Pliska and Preslav, are both within 20km of Shumen. Therefore, considering the surrounding region boasts such historical splendour, I was expecting big things from the Shuman Museum. In truth, it did not deliver genuinely 'big' things, but it was rather interesting. My main criticism was that the museum was very much in the old school when it came to its approach to displaying artefacts. There were no real interactive pieces, little on video and two or three lar...Read More

Before I visited Bulgaria, I was pretty well versed on the country's more recent history such as being part of the Ottoman empire, its involvement in WWII and the Communist era. However, I knew little of the deeper past. I was surprised to learn that it is surprisingly rich. It began in the sixth and seventh centuries as Bulgar tribes began to unite in the areas around the Black Sea in the areas south of the Danube, where the eastern part of present-day Bulgaria is situated. In 680, under the leadership of Khan Asperu, the Bulgars defeated the Byzantine's and the first Bulgarian state was officially formed with its capital in Pliska.Pliska itself has something of a dramatic history and pla...Read More

Attraction | "National Treasure ... Nothing Special"

It didn't take long for me to realise that people in the eastern areas of Bulgaria see the Madara horseman as something of a big deal. My girlfriend explained to me that after Bulgaria was voted into the EU, the country took a vote on which image would be put onto 1 Euro coins that would be minted in Bulgaria. The horseman won in a landslide. It is also on the cover of most tourist brochures and is advertised around the region. However, I have to admit, I found it somewhat disappointing. The first – and most crucial aspect – of my disappointment was the size. On many of the roadside billboards and in the tourist brochures, the horseman looks magnificent, resplendent and above all, large. I...Read More
