This state park has quite a bit to offer. The simplest way to access the park is simply to drive through on Newton B. Drury Parkway. This acts more or less a detour from the US 101, and so the park can be simply driven through instead of the major highway - it is a good wide paved road (it used to be the main road) and gives reasonably close access to some of the redwoods. There are several trail heads that lead off this road, but as my ankle was not too happy I decided to skip these and somehow hiking off a main road didn't seem to attractive to me, but I'm sure that I would have felt differently as soon as the road was out of sight and earshot. I did take a short stroll to see the Big Tree - which w...Read More

Picked up a cup of coffee in Crescent City, and drove out of town towards this unpaved 11 mile road through Jedidiah Smith State Park. I was in a rented car and was slightly worried that the road might be too much. But it is a road that you'll need to drive slow on, and yes it is windy and unpaved, it was easier to drive than some of the local roads at home in Ireland and definitely had fewer potholes. If I thought driving the main CA-1 between Crescent City and Klamath was amazing driving though the redwoods, then this road completely blew that out of the water. The road winds around this huge trees, its path dictated by these ancient giants. It was a misty grey morning, but it only added...Read More

Having stayed at Ravenwood motel just up the road this was my first stop when heading down the road - so it was early morning and I was the only one there. Its off one of the junctions at Klamath off the US-101. There is a small booth at the entrance to pay, but as I was there before it officially opens they have an honesty box for the five dollar entrance charge. It is a small site but the entrance area is pretty and well kept. There are restrooms but I didn't use them as I had just left the motel. There is a small gift shop but equally it wasn't open when I was there before 8am.There was a short laneway up to the tree itself - and there is tight turn to get to drive through t...Read More

Options for dining in Crescent City don't seem to numerous and this place was recommended to me. Its on the US 101 opposite the harbour. Its beside several motels and hotels, and so there seems to be a lot of tourists travelling through and eating here. There was plenty of parking space around the restaurant which is a two storey building.I arrived in, there were quite a few tables already filled, and by the time I had ordered there was a queue of people waiting to be seated. I decided that I had more than enough meat for a while and felt like something vegetarian and had a real carb craving. So I decided to order the Good Harvest Pasta, which came with a choice of soup or salad. As it wa...Read More

Having seen so many old motels that are abandoned ruins its nice to see an older property that has been turned around. Its just off the main road - US 101- about 20 miles south of Crescent City. Its in an Indian Reservation area. The town hasn't too many options for eating. But there is a garage next door.I arrived and check-in - the guy was friendly and effiecient. I had emailed to enquire a few months earlier to see if they had room before I rang to book, but they were happy to do the booking in a series of emails to save me the cost of international phone call. This is an L-shaped one storey building. There is plenty of car parking space - there are a few seating areas aro...Read More
