Renaissance Vinoy Resort Photo, St. Petersburg, Florida
Quote:
The Renaissance Vinoy is now one of my all-time favorite places to stay. I enjoyed walking around and looking at light fixtures here, some of the most beautiful chandeliers and lighting ever. Architecture is 1920's Mediterranean revival and listed on the Registry of historic places. Also the décor art is unusual, enhancing an already spectacular property. The newly-renovated lobby is clean and fresh and gorgeous, and the hotel is non-smoking. The rooms are just elegant, cool and clean look with bright accents, lots of soft towels, great sheets, marble accents in the bathrooms. There are balcony rooms available, some with wonderful bay views. This luxury hotel has a private marina, 18 hole golf co...Read More

Don CeSars is a beautiful and elegant hotel. The building looks like a big pink castle. All the employees we met were attentive and prone to pamper. The rooms are lovely, most have balconies and beach or bay views. The hotel has a huge spa, and a nice 24 hr fitness center. Each room has yummy soft robes in the closet, the softest cotton towels and sheets, luxury bath products. Love the Keurig coffeemakers! This hotel is on the Historic Hotels Registry. They have great pools on the beach and beachside dining and they accept pets. Families are welcome and there is a kid camp option available for parents to get some alone time. Quote:
From the live blues music to the amazing food, everything came together to make for a really great experience. We had appetizers, huge heaping plates enough for our whole table of 8, and all happily flavorful. My rib plate also came piled high with melt-in-mouth awesome ribs and I can't believe it but I finished every succulent bite! I am so ready to go back for more! Our server was cute and attentive. We really loved the band, a great sound and good performers, lots of fun to watch. Dance floor was not crowded, but there was a one couple dancing most of the evening who were so talented and pretty, I felt kinda clumsy watching them. But I did dance a little and joined in a fun impromptu Conga line...Read More

The Dali Museum

Attraction | "art education"

The Dali Museum Photo, St. Petersburg, Florida
Quote:
For someone who isn't really a fan of Salvador Dali, I enjoyed this museum more than I was expecting to. The building itself is worth the trip, architecture by Yann Weymouth is an expression of art principles in a hurricane-proof wrapper. The most important thing I observed, however, was the way all the staff interacted with the visitors. Education in art appreciation subtly in constant process! When you show people all the odd things Dali hid in his pictures, you get them thinking about other art possibilities and that is the best possible beginning. I was delighted to see the installation art piece Rainy Taxi. We also enjoyed attaching our wristbands to the wishing tree, fun tradition. This w...Read More

Fort Desoto Pinellas Park Photo, Tierra Verde, Florida
Quote:
Kayaking is a sport I have not done since I was a little girl. I always loved it so I was excited about this excursion. It was awesome! The day was a little cloudy and perfectly cool (thank you Florida weather management.) The water was so still and calming. We paddled a long way from the kayak rental place and back, and I did get tired, but it was so worth it! I was fascinated by the mangrove islands, never seen anything like them before. So many different big birds! Our host advised it would be too cold to see the manatee, but then totally made up for that by digging up a live conch from the bottom to show us. This was a really good place to go!

Pirates. Coconut drinks served in pirate-faced coconuts. A 300,000-gallon lagoon. Tall sailing ship wreathed in fog. Cannons and swordplay. Cute poodles dancing. Lovely lady acrobats in colorful costumes. Did I mention pirates? Audience participation is required. The food is OK, not great, but remember, there are pirates to distract. And are they ever distracting... What a fun evening. Do not forget to go see these pirates.

Attraction

Legoland Florida Photo, Winter Haven, Florida

I am totally a LEGO fan. This was totally awesome. We took pictures of everything: battling a ninja warrior, conversing with King Tut and Darth Vader, peeking in in the windows of the limited edition Ford Explorer. We watched the christmas tree being assembled and tried to name all the buildings in Miniland without looking at the signs (not successful, I'm sorry to say). Found the Travelocity Gnome easily. They also have a really great waterpark, lots of snack spots and of course, the best LEGO store ever! The park is a 45-minute drive from either Orlando or Tampa, and well worth the time.

If you haven't been yet, you really need to visit this very active time-capsule restaurant in Downtown Disney Orlando. Similar in design to Rainforest Café, this dining experience is all about the dinos. Brontos graze in swamps, triceratops and mammoths trumpet, giant creepy-crawlies dot the walls. A spectacular ice cave is the center of a flashy volcanic light-show. We drank Caveman Punch (who knew they had such good stuff back then?) and cotton-tinis, a fun drink poured from a shaker over a puff of cotton candy and really yummy. The food was great, I had a nice chicken wrap, very well made, and our server was awesome!

I have not had so much fun in ages! So I finished next to last in my group; I did not care. It was exhilarating! Next we played Whirlyball. Now this is not so much a game as it is a bumper-car free-for-all with little paddles and a little waffleball. We totally squished three of those li'l things, sorry. It was just awesome! I believe Seaworld is one of the best parks in the universe. The Orlando verion does not disappoint! The high points of the visit always include the shows, and the Shamu show is the most popular of them. It is changed up often enough to stay fresh and entertaining, and the focus on oceanic ecological issues is very pertinent. Just for pure fun, the roller coasters can't be beat! My favorite is the Manta; just like flying!! They have the most awesome 3-D dome theater with an on-going show about the life of a sea turtle. Very enjoyable and educational. Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin are both Westin hotels and have the Westin 'Heavenly Beds.' These are truly amazing beds, the most comfortable I have ever experienced. Try it out just for that, and you will come back for all the other great perks of being on Disney property. All the theme parks are easy to get to, within walking distance or a short water-taxi ride away. Rooms are very pretty and comfortable. The differences between the two resorts are mainly room decor themes and colors, property size, and the size of the rooms. Dolphin rooms are a little bit larger, so it may be a better option for families.
