Attraction | "Have A Stroll Through The Lickey Hills"

Lickey Hills Country Park Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
One of my favourite places in Birmingham is the Lickey Hills Country Park. It's basically a massive 524 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Birmingham, also bordering Bromsgrove and Rednal. I used to come here as a child, and now with children of my own I find it's an ideal place to spend the day and get some fresh air into the family's lungs at the same time! An added bonus is the fact that the Park is free to visit with very few 'optional extras' available, making this a very cheap day out.The wonderful thing about the Lickey Hills Country Park is the greenness of the place; it's beautifully unkempt and generally left to its own devices as far as what plants grow in which areas. There ...Read More

Attraction | "There Really Are Foxes Here!"

Fox Hollies Park Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
One of the prettiest parks in Birmingham is, in my opinion, Fox Hollies Park which is located in the Acocks Green area. One of the main attractions of Fox Hollies for me is the stream which runs through the park; the water is always surprisingly clear and is deep enough to spot the odd small fish battling against the current. The edges of the stream are fantastic for the kids to have a paddle in the warm weather, although do keep an eye on them as the stream bed is very slippery. Staying on the subject of water, there's a large pool which contains a multitude of different species of fish and you're welcome to bring your fishing rod to see what you can catch. There are notices re...Read More

New Hall Valley Country Park

Attraction | "Exercise, Fresh Air And Beautiful Scenery"

Quote:
This morning, out of boredom more than anything, we decided to try a new country park which opened in Sutton Coldfield a couple of years ago. New Hall Valley Country Park covers nearly 200 acres of green belt land and is a haven for wildlife and an amazing range of plants and flora species. My first impression when we arrived was how quiet and tranquil the place was; crisscrossed by cycle lanes and pretty lanes to walk down, there's none of the uniformity I was expecting from such a recent development. It's so green, perhaps to be expected, with lots and lots of open land ringed by trees of all ages and sizes. You can see much of the park as soon as you enter because of the hilly lay of the...Read More

Attraction | "A Breath Of Fresh Air"

Cannon Hill Park Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
Back in 1873, Miss Ann Ryland gave 57 acres of her vast estate to the people of Birmingham with the wish that this land should be made into a public park for everyone to enjoy. It was a hugely popular attraction then and remains so now, over 120 years later. It lies on Pershore Road in South Birmingham, adjacent to the fantastic nature centre and it's worth combining the two visits to make a day of it. The park is huge, the 57 acres have been added to and Cannon Hill is now one of the largest and best maintained parks in Birmingham. There's so much to do here and the environment in different sections of the park is extremely varied, so I won't bore you with an in-depth descript...Read More

Attraction | "The Ancient Forests Of Sutton Coldfield"

Sutton Park National Nature Reserve Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
At some point in history, what is now Sutton Coldfield was completely covered in a huge forest which spread throughout most of The Midlands. Sutton Park is one of the very few areas of this forest which still remain today. Sutton Park covers a whopping 2400 acres making it, without a doubt, the biggest park in Birmingham and one of the biggest in the whole UK! I love this place. Because the park covers such a vast area, there are several entrances to choose from and each will take you into a different section of the park. For example, going in the entrance which is closest to Sutton Coldfield Town Centre will lead you to the small funfair, onsite pub and one of the large lakes in the park....Read More

Attraction | "Being Environmentally Friendly - If Only For The Day!"

Birmingham Ecopark Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
It’s been so sunny in Birmingham today that we just had to find somewhere to pop to for a few hours; it would have been sacrilege to sit indoors on such a warm and summery day. My next door neighbour suggested we visit the Birmingham Ecopark in Small Heath. The Ecopark is Birmingham’s section of The Wildlife Trust and is a large area dedicated to educating us Brummies on the importance of sustainability, ie. using environmentally sound ways to produce an area of beauty. The park doesn’t look as well maintained as other Birmingham parks, but this is because Ecopark are trying to attract as many wild plants and animals into their boundaries as possible and this simply won’t happe...Read More

Attraction | "Water AND A Park All In One Day!"

Kingsbury Water Park Photo, Birmingham, England
Quote:
Being as it was the first time we'd been to Kingsbury Water Park, we parked in the small car park next to the visitors centre so we could explore locally in the park. All you can see is green, interspersed with blue when you spot one of the lakes. And it's so peaceful. Even though you're only a couple of hundred yards away from the road there's no traffic noise. We walked across a football sized piece of grass towards one of the many lakes. Once we got to the lake, we were innundated with geese and swans. There was a baby goose (chick?) and he was tiny and all fluffy. Awwwww! Altogether there about 40 swans and double that amount of geese. The kids loved this because the birds were so use...Read More
