Restaurant | "Bar food"

We had spent the morning horse riding, and so we arrived in town looking for a late lunch. The three of us were craving something greasy and American like, so when we spotted this bar serving food, we decided it would satisify our hunger. It is upstairs - and is a dark bar. There is a balcony area overlooking the main square in Jackson, but it was warm day and having been out in the sun for a few hours decided that while people watching may be fun, we would lurk in the dark bar in the air conditioning. It is a dark bar - at lunchtime they had sectioned off the back portion to create a smaller space, but it was busy the day we were there, so even with a late lunch we were lucky to get seated...Read More

Restaurant | "mmm...not too bad"

We were staying in Shilo Inn Suites which is just behind this restaurant/bar. My travelling companions all scattered with different ideas of what they would like to do for the evening. We had been camping most of our trip but to split up some drives we did some hotel stays, and tonight was one of those nights. It did mean that some wanted to use the hotel facilties of laundry and pool, others decided to explore the local area, some made their own dinner plans. So I ended up solo for dinner, and without a car at this point, and a sprained ankle my options were limited, so Jakers which is about a 1 minute walk from the hotel's front door, was the easiest option.I went in - its a bar restaura...Read More

Attraction | "Alien landscape"

This very strange landscape that is fairly barren, black lava as far as the eye can see. The lava came from fissures, rather than a volcano. We stopped at the visitors centre, topped up water bottles, used the facilities, looked at the exhibits and watched the short film that explained this weird landscape. We drove from the visitors centre past cinder cones, splatter cones and on towards the caves. The lava here travelled so far because of a network of lava tubes. This meant that they were just under the surface but because the lava wasn't exposed to the atmosphere it did not cool as quickly and so was able to travel for many miles. Under the black surface there remains many lava tub...Read More

Hotel | "bit of a time warp"

Large lobby area with free coffee and a few sofas. There are vending machines outside the elevators. Our room was in a strange time warp. There was a brown square pattern carpet and pink/green/brown comforter, not a single pattern on the carpet, chairs, bed cover, curtain and the floral pictures on the walls. It was such a mish mash of stuff, it was horrific. The air conditioner made a ridiculous rack and was set way to high so that the room was freezing. Turning it off meant the room was too warm. And opening the window would have been perfect but there was too much noise coming from outside. We boiled the night away in the end.The room itself had two beds, a desk, table with t...Read More

Bar J Chuckwagon

Attraction | "a bit cheesy"

Having been to another place doing a Chuckwagon supper in Moab which was less than stellar, that when some of the others suggested this for the evening, I was less than enthusiastic, but I made no fuss and went along. We arrived a little late, so while most of the other people there had time to get a drink or wander around the grounds which were full of items relating to 'the West' and cowboys, we landed in just in time to get our tickets and start to file in to the dining room. It was a huge space with long tables. Its all arranged to be called by table number. The walls were decorated with items related to cowboys and ranches from old boots to storm lanterns. The evening was introduced, ...Read More

Hotel | "Far from town"

Quote:
This place is a fair drive out of Jackson. It is right on a fairly busy road and beside the river though not really any enjoyment of the river, though we could hear it running at night. The campsite we had was fairly sloped, in fact most of the tent sites suffered with this problem and which meant it difficult to use the picnic tables provided. We were delighted with the fire pit to keep warm at night and make some smores...but its closeness to the tents rather concerned me. It was a rather cramped site, with little room between sites and little space to park any vehicles. It seemed that they really did want to pack as many in and make as much money as possible. And there were few spaces left that we ...Read More

Attraction | "Stunning Mountain Range"

We drove from Yellowstone in Grand Teton National Park. I liked the story about the naming of the road we travelled on, John D. Rockerfeller, who in 1926 when here disliked how the land was being bought and used, so he schemed as he knew local ranchers would dislike a park, so he started buying land and later donated it to the federal government - I liked the scheming part. Our first stop was Jackson Lake Lodge, which is a huge development of a hotel and cabin. But it does provide a good stop as it serves coffee in its lounge and patio which provide stunning views of the jagged row of peaks that suddenly just seem to shoot up from the ground. A perfect coffee stop! (well the coffee could ha...Read More
