A Fantastic Drive Around London

My partner works around London sometimes but it tends to be on the outskirts, recently however he had some stuff to deliver around the Spitalfields Market area and his sat nav took him along the 'scenic' route - he came home full of talk about how this route had taken him past some fabulous locations, making me slightly jealous as although I've spent weekends in the capital I've never really seen the sights. I had my usual birthday treats in May with the added extra of Mark promising me a day in London, it wasn't designed to be anything special but I decided I wanted to see this impressive route he kept telling me about! We set off at around 9.30am and travelled straight down the M40, arri...Read More

For my birthday Mark bought me a few small pressies and promised me a day in London; nothing special, just a drive past the sights followed by lunch and a bit of shopping somewhere. It was a boiling hot day so as we were heading out of London we stopped off at The Blind Beggar for a cooling beer before tackling the sticky two hour car journey home. The Blind Beggar is, of course, historically the haunt of the notorious Kray twins and their gang - the pub being the scene of the shooting of George Cornell for which Ronnie Kray was eventually jailed for life. Mark's a bit of a British gangster buff so we took the parking challenge (luckily squeezing into a space outside Nandos) and walked t...Read More

After driving around London on a very hot day at the end of May I was in need of something cold and refreshing. My partner made do with an ice lolly as we saw the sights but I wanted something a little more interesting. I came across the Cookies and Cream ice cream parlour quite by chance, after parking in front of it while visiting a local pub that we both wanted to see. It stood out as having a very well maintained frontage compared to other shops and eateries in the immediate area, it was the outside seating that drew me in as I just fancied soaking up some sun before getting back into our hot and stuffy car to head home. Cookies & Cream not only serves ice cream but also a wide r...Read More

Restaurant | "The Perfect Location For a London Lunch!"

Our recent day out in London included a walk round Spitalfields Market; we'd been thinking about a nice market hotdog but there were none to be found (typical!), so with rumbling tummies we turned to Canteen. I'd never heard of the place before but have since learned that there are four of their restaurants dotted around London, it was a really hot day and the open plan design of the place appealed so we wandered across and sat down to look at the menu. It's exactly the kind of food you'd expect based on the stylishly trendy decor - meals that always have a twist, but are based on everyday dishes. The menu selection isn't huge but there's something for everyone, including a roast lunch that...Read More

After eating the weather was so glorious that we decided to spend an hour or so people watching while enjoying a couple of drinks. As we'd been seated fairly far back in the restaurant we moved to the front area of Canteen where we could catch the sun better and also have a better view of the surrounding Spitalfields Market. Seating is equally good in this area and it's nice to have the option of sitting either indoors or outdoors, with equally high quality furniture in both areas! That sounds crazy I know, but too often 'outdoor diners' are fobbed off with less attractive tables and seating - here at Canteen it doesn't matter where you sit as you'll be equally comfortable anywhere!Drinks ...Read More
