Attraction | "Maxima - The best place to shop"

Quote:
My affinity with Maxima was born in 2004 but is still going strong. Set up in 1991 in Vilnius, Maxima could be found in 3 forms - Minima, Media and Maxima, the names denoting the size of the shop. Today, those names have been scrubbed and the shops have been given an X at the end of them to show the size with Maxima XXX being the biggest. These shops can be found throughout the Baltics and have recently set up shop in Bulgaria and are working at getting into the Polish market too.Maxima has such a fantastic variety of products and the best place to witness it is at the Maxima XXX on Mindaugo Gatve, a place that despite being 500km from my house in Warsaw, I consider going for christmas sho...Read More

Cancan Pizza

Restaurant | "Cancan Pizza - Superbly Underrated!"

Quote:
Cancan pizza was part of my personal pizza mission of testing out every kind of pizza place in the world (could take a while!)Situated on the crossroads of Pylimo and Traku, it is in the heart of Vilnius. The pizzeria was recommended to us by a friend as being cheap and serving large portions, we sat outside under the parasols but I also visited the toilet and was shocked to see how huge the pizzeria was, there were several floors of seats inside and the toilets were spotless. The staff were helpful when called upon but not in your face and they spoke several languages.Due to permanent promotions, Cancan pizza turns out to be one of the cheapest pizzas in Vilnius. We had an XL ...Read More

Deniz Kebabai Kavine

Restaurant | "The Best Kebab in Vilnius"

Quote:
When I first visited Lithuania there were no kebab places at all but over the last few years, they have been sneaking in more and more, you can now find them in certainly the big cities and occasionally at petrol stations too. Unlike the ubiqutious kebab in Poland that often makes use of ingredients which are cheap locally like cabbage and gherkins, the ones I've tried in Lithuania are more similar to the English or German style Doners. The best one in Vilnius in my eyes is Deniz Kebabai Kavine which can be found on Traku gatve, in the centre. The decor is what you would expact from a cheap kebab shop, a couple of tables where you can sit down and a canteen feel with a couple of boards abov...Read More

Attraction | "Where basketball is not the only sport..."

Quote:
I recently made a small trip to the Baltics, I used to go a couple of times a year but this was my first visit in a couple of years since I'd been to Vilnius, my favourite European capital. I found myself there on a Saturday and really wanted to watch Liverpool v Man U. Unlike most Europeans, Lithuanians have almost no interest in football - they are basketball mad and finding somewhere that shows it can be a bit of an art! The old expat pubs, for one reason or another have closed down, The Portabello, up near the Gate of Dawn was closed and a friend of ours called people in the bar trade to try to locate the forbidden fruit in a rush before kick off.Near the corner of Vilniaus Gatve and I...Read More

Balti Drambliai

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Decent Vegetarian Restaurant and Nice Place to Chill Out"

Quote:
Back in 2004, I visited Balti Drambiliai for the first time. It's a vegetarian restaurant relatively central in Vilnius and also acts as the Headquarters for meetings of Vilnius Hitchhiking Club where competitions and journeys are discussed amongst other things! That time it was pretty quiet but youngsters have more money these days and it's almost always full, there's a courtyard upstairs which is usually full of smokers since the ban on smoking at the beginning of 2007. Downstairs is a little labryinth of rooms in a brick basement, there is an upper tier that runs along one side of hte wall and is well hidden to give it a romantic feel, makes it awkward to find people though! The curry he...Read More
